Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute Amid Rising Tensions and Fan Clashes

Barcelona has officially called off a tribute for its eight players who won the World Cup with Spain last month. The planned ceremony, set before their La Liga match against Athletic Club at Camp Nou, was scrapped following violent clashes between fans and police, heightening political tensions in Catalonia.

Background on the Cancelled Event

The club intended to honor its World Cup-winning stars ahead of the Thursday fixture against Athletic Bilbao. Other Spanish clubs have already held similar celebrations during their home openers, but Barcelona's decision came amid unrest sparked after their recent 5-0 win over Elche.

During that match, supporters traveling with pro-independence Estelada flags were reportedly assaulted by national police, with flags confiscated. The aggressive police response forced the club to reconsider the event.

Joan Laporta Speaks Out

Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, explained the cancellation on Wednesday. He said the current environment made it impossible to hold a celebratory event:

"The ceremony to honor the world champions will not take place because it is not the right context. The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands this decision."

Laporta also defended fans' right to display the Estelada, which symbolizes Catalan independence. He emphasized football should bring people together rather than cause division:

"The Estelada reflects the views of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It's part of freedom of expression."

Criticism of Police Conduct

The treatment of fans displaying regional symbols remains a sensitive issue across Spain. Laporta strongly condemned the actions of the national police during the weekend’s incidents:

"We reject the disproportionate use of force by police officers against Barca fans carrying the Estelada before the Elche match. We demand appropriate punishment once all facts are verified."

He added a call for safety and respect for supporters moving forward:

"We hope punishments will ensure Catalans and Barca fans can carry their flag without fear or stigma from state security forces."

Focus Shifts Back to Football

Despite the controversy overshadowing preparations, Barcelona will now concentrate on their game against Athletic Club. The team aims to build on their strong performance against Elche and keep up their momentum in La Liga, even as political tensions continue to make headlines.
