Barcelona Makes First Bid for Julián Álvarez as Summer Plans Accelerate
Barcelona are wasting no time drawing up the next version of their attack.
With the deal for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United close to the finish line, the La Liga champions have already moved on to their main centre-forward target: Julián Álvarez of Atletico Madrid.
Deco moves, Álvarez pushes
According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are preparing their first official offer to Atletico for the Argentine striker, a move that follows a face-to-face meeting earlier this week between Barça sporting director Deco and Álvarez’s agent, in a summit mediated by Juanma Lopez.
The player has done his part to force the issue. Álvarez has already told Atletico Madrid that he wants to leave and has turned down the club’s proposal for a contract renewal. That stance changes the temperature of any negotiation. Atletico know they are dealing with a forward who has made up his mind.
Barcelona’s plan is clear: put the framework of a deal in place well before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They expect other European heavyweights to circle a 26-year-old forward entering his peak years, and they do not want to be dragged into a bidding war once the tournament begins.
€100m vs €150m: the first battle line
Inside Barcelona, Álvarez is viewed as the priority No. 9 for this window. Even so, the club has drawn a financial red line. They are prepared to go up to €100 million, but not beyond.
Atletico Madrid see it differently. They are reluctant to strengthen a direct domestic rival and are holding out for a fee in the region of €150 million. That gap, on paper, sets up a long, tense negotiation.
The leverage sits somewhere in the middle. Atletico want to maximise a major asset and avoid losing him below their valuation. Barcelona know the player wants out and that his refusal to extend his contract weakens Atletico’s hand over time.
For now, the next step is set: Barcelona will table their opening bid and formal talks between the two clubs will begin. How far each side is willing to bend on that €50 million difference will tell us just how serious Barcelona are about building their new era around Julián Álvarez.
