Barcelona to Leave Camp Nou Next Season as €510m Funding for Roof Installation Gets Approval

Barcelona will have to move out of Camp Nou again next season after the club approved a fresh €510 million (£438m/$584m) funding package. This money is earmarked for installing a new roof on the stadium, forcing the team to relocate temporarily to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium while work takes place. The plan now sees the Blaugrana delaying their permanent return until January 2028.

Temporary Relocation Confirmed

The club treasurer, Ferran Olive, confirmed that the first team will play at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium during the intensive construction period. These upgrades are part of the larger Espai Barca redevelopment project, which has faced repeated delays and rising costs. The board expects the permanent homecoming to Camp Nou will not happen before early 2028.

Board Approves Staggered Financing Plan

To manage the growing financial impact of ongoing setbacks, the club's members voted in favor of a substantial new financing arrangement over the weekend. This package is designed to keep the stadium overhaul moving forward and covers additional expenses caused by delays.

  • First tranche: €300 million to complete the expanded Camp Nou project, including new facilities, services, and advanced technology.
  • Second tranche: €210 million raised through two issuances of Media Notes worth €105 million each. The first was issued in July 2026; the second is planned for October or November 2026.

This fresh borrowing pushes the total estimated cost of the stadium renovation close to €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn).

Stadium Capacity and Future Plans

Currently, Camp Nou holds 62,000 fans, but this will rise to 75,000 during the ongoing reopening of the third tier this season. When renovations finish in January 2028, capacity will increase to 95,000, with a further jump to 105,000 expected for the 2028-29 campaign.

The revamped stadium will quickly attract global attention as UEFA has already chosen it to host the 2029 Champions League final.
