Barcelona's Midfield Reinforcement: Rodri's Arrival Waits

Barcelona will have to wait to unveil their marquee midfield signing.

Hansi Flick confirmed on Saturday that Rodri will sit out the champions’ LaLiga opener away to Elche on Sunday, with the coach targeting the second league game, against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, for the Spaniard’s first involvement.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

Barca paid a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros for the Spanish World Cup winner, a statement move to reinforce the heart of Flick’s midfield. The engine room looks stacked. The attack does not.

Lewandowski gone. Ferran Torres gone. A glaring hole through the middle remains, and Flick did not disguise the fact that Barcelona are still combing the market for a striker.

He refused to name his starting centre forward for the trip to the Martinez Valero, but one name is already forcing its way into the conversation: Hamza Abdelkarim. The 18-year-old Egyptian has lit up pre-season with four goals in friendlies and caught his coach’s eye.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” Flick said. “He’s a No 9, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

If Flick opts against throwing the teenager straight into a league opener, he still has options to improvise. New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can drift inside and operate as false nines, as can Raphinha and Dani Olmo. It might not be a classic Barcelona No 9, but it could be enough to bridge the gap until the club land a specialist.

At the other end of the pitch, one new arrival is ready to go immediately. Flick confirmed that Joao Cancelo, signed this week, is available to face Elche.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” the coach added.

So Rodri waits, the striker search continues, and a bold, slightly improvised Barcelona attack heads into opening weekend under a coach who sounds convinced his reshaped side can still land the first punch of the new season.
