Birmingham Battles to Draw Against The Robins After Late Penalty

Birmingham clawed their way to a draw on a chaotic afternoon, twice punished by Scott Twine and The Robins’ sharp attacking play before a late, contentious penalty rescued them.

The first half never really settled. Both sides snatched at half-chances, the game stuck in a scrappy rhythm. Twine dragged an early effort wide, while Bright Osayi-Samuel and Lorent Tolaj traded misses at opposite ends as the contest stuttered rather than flowed.

It needed a jolt. The visitors supplied it.

A long ball dropped into the Birmingham half and was nodded into the area, sparking a penalty-box scramble. Twine rose to meet the first header, saw it blocked, then reacted quicker than anyone else, stabbing the loose ball past the exposed James Beadle. The Robins finally had their first goal of the season, and suddenly the match had a pulse.

That strike woke Birmingham up. Urgency crept into their play, tackles bit harder, and the crowd found its voice. Right on the stroke of half-time, chaos reigned again.

A cross from the flank caused panic, Vicente’s effort cannoning off the post and ricocheting cruelly against goalkeeper Tickle, who could only watch in horror as the ball bounced over the line. Blues’ first goal of the season arrived in the most awkward fashion possible – off an opposing keeper.

The restart did nothing to slow The Robins’ momentum. Twine, hunting a brace, almost found it soon after the interval. He burst into space and drove in a low shot that Beadle just about clawed away, the Birmingham back line ragged and badly out of shape.

The pressure told. The visitors took control and their second goal oozed class. A slick move sliced through the hosts and Ballard, with his back to goal, produced a brilliant backheel to finish, sending the travelling supporters into raptures behind the goal. Birmingham looked stunned, the away end bouncing.

Yet the drama still had one more twist.

As the clock ticked down, a ball into the box struck Atkinson, and referee Will Finnie pointed to the spot, adjudging handball. Protests were instant and furious from The Robins, but the decision stood. Gray stepped up and coolly slotted home, turning a likely defeat into a salvaged point and leaving the visitors to reflect on how a statement away win had slipped through their fingers.
