Chelsea Secure Joao Pedro Until 2034: Barcelona's Search Hit Hard
Barcelona’s search for a new No 9 has just taken a heavy hit.
As the Catalan club steels itself for disappointment in the chase for Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, one of the alternative names on Deco’s shortlist has been wiped off the market. The Joao Pedro option is gone.
Chelsea confirmed on their official channels on Saturday that the Brazilian forward has signed a new contract running all the way to 2034, a statement of intent as loud as anything coming from the pitch. The message from Stamford Bridge is clear: their centre-forward is not for sale.
Chelsea lock down their new spearhead
Joao Pedro only arrived at Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025, but he has moved at speed ever since.
He walked into a dressing room still searching for a new attacking leader and immediately filled the vacancy. On the biggest stage of all, he delivered. The Brazilian scored in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup, striking twice against his former club Fluminense to send Chelsea into the showpiece, then finding the net against Paris Saint-Germain to help secure the world title.
The impact did not fade once the confetti was swept away.
Across his first full season, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals in all competitions, driving Chelsea’s attack through the 2025-2026 campaign. Supporters responded in kind, voting him Player of the Season. For a club that has cycled through forwards in recent years, he quickly became the reference point.
He set the tone domestically too. Joao Pedro scored Chelsea’s first goal of the 2025-2026 Premier League season away at West Ham United, then grabbed the only goal in a tight win at Tottenham Hotspur. When Chelsea needed a cutting edge, he supplied it.
Europe told the same story. Against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, he struck twice as Chelsea imposed themselves on the continental stage, underlining why the club moved so aggressively to secure his future.
“I always dreamed of playing for a big club”
The new deal is backed up by the player’s own words.
“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” Joao Pedro said.
The connection runs beyond the pitch.
“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined,” he added, underlining why any attempt to lure him away was always likely to be an uphill battle.
The ambition around him is feeding that commitment.
“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals.”
Barcelona left looking elsewhere
For Barcelona, the timing could hardly be worse. With Alvarez proving difficult to prise away from Atletico Madrid, Joao Pedro had emerged in reports as one of Deco’s preferred alternatives to strengthen the attack.
Now the door has been slammed shut by a contract running to 2034 and a club determined to build around their Brazilian spearhead.
Chelsea keep their striker. Barcelona go back to the drawing board.
