Barcelona intensifies pursuit of Julian Alvarez
FC Barcelona have chosen their man and are refusing to look away. Julian Alvarez sits at the top of their summer wishlist, and the Catalan club are prepared to push their limits to get him out of Atletico Madrid.
The first shot has already been fired: an offer worth around €100 million, including add-ons, landed on Atletico’s desk and was swiftly rejected. The message from the Spanish capital was blunt – Alvarez is not for sale, certainly not to Barcelona.
Barcelona, though, are not walking away. Their initial proposal remains on the table, but with a ticking clock attached. The current bid, structured to be paid in six instalments, is understood to expire at the end of the month. The pressure is deliberate.
Now comes the escalation.
Barça ready to go to €130 million
According to journalist Santi Ovalle on Cadena SER, Barcelona are prepared to improve their offer for the Argentine forward, contradicting suggestions that they had reached their limit. The plan is not to raise the fixed fee, but to load the package with more performance-related variables, taking the total value to around €130 million.
It is a classic Barcelona move in their current financial reality: protect the guaranteed outlay, lean on add-ons, and hope the player’s impact justifies every euro.
The intention is clear. They want to “unlock” a transfer that Atletico have tried to shut down from the outset.
Laporta steps into the front line
The negotiations have now moved into more political territory. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has personally taken control of the talks with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin.
This shift did not happen by accident. Atletico’s sporting director, according to the same report, has no working relationship with Barcelona’s sporting director Deco. When Deco submitted a formal proposal, it was effectively sidelined and never escalated to the key decision-makers at Atletico.
So Laporta has cut through the bureaucracy. This is now an executive-level conversation, president to CEO, with Barcelona determined to be heard in the right room by the right people.
Atletico dig in
On the other side of the table, Atletico’s stance has not moved. Sources at the club continue to insist they will not negotiate Alvarez’s sale, and certainly not to Barcelona.
That line has held all summer, even as the player has publicly declared his desire to leave. Diego Simeone and his staff have made their position equally clear: Alvarez has been ordered to report for pre-season on August 10. Until told otherwise, he remains an Atletico player, expected to work, train, and prepare for the new campaign.
Barcelona are banking on that tension growing. They are hoping for another public gesture from Alvarez, something that might turn a private standoff into a full-blown power struggle and crank up the pressure on Atletico’s hierarchy.
Few alternatives, little margin for error
All the while, Barça cannot afford to be naïve. They are scanning the market, weighing up alternatives in case the Alvarez deal collapses completely. But inside the club, the belief is that there are very few forwards who match the specific profile Hansi Flick wants to lead his attack.
That makes Alvarez more than just a target. He is the plan.
The clock is running on Barcelona’s current offer, Atletico are refusing to budge, and a restless striker sits in the middle. Something will have to give – the only question is who blinks first.
