Barcelona Keeps Rashford Talks Alive Amid United's Dilemma

Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it. The Spanish club remain in regular contact with the forward’s representatives as they explore whether one of this window’s most dramatic moves could yet be revived.

Rashford is back at Manchester United after 18 months away, wearing their colours again because Barcelona chose not to trigger their €30m (£26m/$35m) option to buy him permanently. That decision came despite a productive campaign in Catalonia, where he delivered 28 goal contributions across all competitions.

Barcelona’s hierarchy had always leaned towards another loan, mindful that Rashford still had two years left on his United deal. United shut that idea down. They were only prepared to discuss a permanent transfer, and when that stance didn’t shift, Rashford returned to Old Trafford.

He has come back as United’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick and his staff have moved quickly to reintegrate him into the first-team group and are ready to use him this season. For now, he is not being treated like a man on the way out.

But the window is still open. And so is the door.

Rashford’s camp have fielded interest from several clubs, yet the sheer size of the financial package required means only a handful can realistically step forward. Barcelona are one of that select group and, according to sources, remain deep in the conversation over what would be a remarkable return to the Nou Camp.

Barcelona’s attack in flux

The landscape in Barcelona has shifted since last season. Their need for attacking reinforcements has grown, not shrunk.

Rashford has gone back to England. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both departed. Roony Bardghji, a key part of their plans, has been ruled out for the season with injury. A front line that once looked crowded suddenly feels thin.

Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have arrived to plug some of the gaps, but internally there is no sense that the rebuild is complete. The dialogue with Rashford’s representatives has stayed open for that reason.

The player, for his part, would be happy to return to Catalunya. The sticking point sits in Manchester. It is unclear whether United would entertain another loan, even one with an obligation to buy attached. Their stance to this point has been clear: no more temporary exits.

Complicating matters further is Barcelona’s long-running pursuit of Julian Alvarez. The Catalan club are still working on a deal for the Argentina international, but Atletico Madrid have dug in. Their message has been consistent and blunt: Alvarez is not for sale.

That firm resistance has created a stalemate. As long as Atletico refuse to budge, Barcelona’s options narrow. In that context, Rashford’s name stays on the table.

United’s internal dilemma

From United’s perspective, the equation is anything but simple.

On one side, Rashford is back in the fold, a proven attacker who has already been absorbed into Carrick’s plans. The club have accepted, at least for now, that they will carry one of the Premier League’s heaviest wage commitments.

On the other, there is a hard financial reality. Senior figures at Old Trafford are still debating whether that is sustainable as a long-term solution, especially if Barcelona – or another elite club – eventually put forward a package that makes sense on the balance sheet.

For the moment, Rashford remains a Manchester United player, training, preparing and positioned to play a role this season.

Barcelona, though, have not shut the conversation down. With their Alvarez chase stuck and their forward line still under construction, the question lingers: if the right offer lands on United’s desk, does this saga take one more twist?
