Juventus Signs Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham

Juventus have turned away from Emiliano Martínez and moved decisively for Guglielmo Vicario, striking a deal with Tottenham to take the Italian goalkeeper on an initial loan with an option to buy.

The agreement includes a clause allowing Juve to make the move permanent next year for £8.6m, a sharp drop from the £17.2m Spurs paid to bring Vicario to north London in 2023. It also underlines how quickly his status at the club has changed.

Once entrenched as first choice, Vicario has slipped down the pecking order under Roberto De Zerbi, who has handed the No 1 shirt to Antonin Kinsky. The shift opened the door for Juventus, who had been scouring the market for a new goalkeeper after reassessing their options.

Their initial focus had been on Martínez. Aston Villa’s World Cup winner emerged as a serious target after the Premier League club agreed a deal worth around £30m with Parma for Zion Suzuki. Juventus tested Villa’s resolve with a €10m bid over the weekend, but that offer was rejected and the Italians quickly cooled their interest. Martínez is also currently out with a finger injury, adding another layer of uncertainty.

So the attention moved to Vicario. For Juventus, he offers a familiar profile: Italian, experienced, and available on terms that leave room in the budget for other business. For the player, it is a route back to a starting role and a platform in Serie A at a club that still expects to compete for major honours.

Vicario has made almost 120 appearances for Spurs since arriving in 2023, but the landscape around him has shifted fast. De Zerbi has not only promoted Kinsky but also brought in Martin Dubravka on a free transfer as additional cover, tightening the squeeze on the 29-year-old.

His departure continues a summer of churn at Tottenham. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already gone, and Pape Matar Sarr could follow. Everton and Nottingham Forest are both pushing for the Senegal midfielder, who is valued at £30m.

All of this sits against the backdrop of an aggressive rebuild. Spurs have already committed more than £200m on six new signings in this window, reshaping De Zerbi’s squad at speed and with clear attacking intent.

That attacking refresh is far from finished. Tottenham are keen on Savinho from Manchester City, with the Brazil forward left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff and understood to be open to a move. Cody Gakpo is another prominent name on their radar, with Spurs heavily linked with a move for the Liverpool forward as De Zerbi looks to sharpen his front line.

Juventus, meanwhile, now have their goalkeeper solution lined up. If Vicario settles and the option is triggered, this could be one of the quieter deals of the summer that ends up shaping two seasons: one in Turin’s penalty area, and another in north London’s transfer war room.
