Barcelona Sells Tommy Marques to Braga for €10 Million
Barcelona have decided to draw a line under Tommy Marques’ time at the club, with Braga striking a permanent deal worth €10 million plus add-ons for the 19-year-old midfielder.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already delivered his familiar “Here we go”, signalling that an agreement is fully in place between the two clubs. Barcelona will bank €10 million up front, with a further €2 million potentially arriving through performance-related bonuses.
Braga beat German interest
Braga have not just picked up a promising midfielder; they have won a contest. Marques had concrete interest from two German clubs, but the Portuguese prospect has chosen to return to his home country and continue his development there.
The package reflects how highly he is rated inside the game. A fixed €10 million fee for a player who was still officially part of Barcelona’s reserve setup underlines both his potential and Barcelona’s willingness to make a decisive call on his future.
From Flick’s orbit to the exit door
Marques spent much of last season hovering around Hansi Flick’s first-team squad. Registered with the reserves, he still managed to step onto the Camp Nou pitch in February, making his senior debut at 18 in a 3-0 win over Mallorca, playing six minutes. Another brief cameo followed against Alaves.
For a while, the path looked like it might open up. With Marc Casado expected to depart, there was a genuine window for Marques to climb the internal ladder and secure a more regular place in the senior group.
Then the club changed the equation.
Rodri arrival shuts the door
Barcelona’s push to bring in Manchester City midfielder Rodri has reshaped the midfield hierarchy before the season has even begun. With one of the world’s elite midfielders now set to walk through the door, the competition in the centre of the pitch will only intensify.
For a young player on the fringes, that shift is brutal. Minutes that were already hard to come by suddenly look out of reach.
The warning signs had been there in pre-season. At the Udine triangular tournament, Marques featured for just 28 minutes, coming on in Barcelona’s second match, a 1-0 defeat to Udinese. His involvement shrank as the new campaign approached, and with it, the sense that the club saw him as part of the immediate first-team picture.
A move that suits everyone
The reduced role pointed in one direction: a permanent exit. Now Barcelona have secured a fee that reflects his talent, Braga have landed a 19-year-old with first-team experience at one of Europe’s giants, and Marques gets a clearer runway for his career.
He leaves Barcelona with only a handful of senior minutes but a reputation intact and a significant price tag attached to his name.
The next question is simple and sharp: can Tommy Marques turn that promise, and Braga’s €10 million gamble, into a career that makes Barcelona wonder what they have let go?
