Barcelona's Relentless Pursuit Against Sevilla: A Clash at Sánchez-Pizjuán
The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán has rarely scared Barcelona. One defeat in their last 10 La Liga visits to Sevilla tells its own story. And on Sunday, the leaders arrive looking like a side operating on a different level to the rest of Spain.
Sevilla punching up, not settling
Fourth place after six games. For Sevilla, that’s not just respectable, it’s a statement after last season’s grind to 13th under two different managers. Luis García Plaza has brought order and edge: four league wins already, including a sharp 3-1 at Athletic Bilbao in August and a gritty 1-0 at ten-man Deportivo on Wednesday.
There is, however, a ceiling they’ve yet to crack.
Their only La Liga defeat this season was a 3-1 home loss to Atlético Madrid. That result hangs over this weekend. When the elite have turned up, Sevilla have still looked a rung below. And they’ll be weakened again: Rubén Vargas and Arouna Sangante are out injured.
Even so, this is not a side that folds. Sevilla have scored in five of their last six competitive matches and hit three at San Mamés last month. They even put four past Barcelona here in a rare 4-1 win back in October 2025. The Sánchez-Pizjuán can still snarl.
Probable XI? Vlachodimos in goal, with Juan Iglesias, Castrín, Kike Salas and Suazo across the back. Agoumé and Fofana as the shield, Kochorashvili and Sierra offering legs and craft, and Stassin with Correia up top to chase any loose ball and half-chance.
Flick’s Barcelona are relentless
Across the touchline, Hansi Flick has built a machine that doesn’t bother with brakes.
Barcelona have a perfect La Liga record and 28 goals from six matches. Their scorelines read like basketball: five, two, seven, five, six and nine goals in those games. Only a 2-0 win over Athletic Club fell short of four total goals. They then rolled into Europe and smashed Feyenoord 5-1 in their first Champions League league-phase outing.
All of this without a recognised centre-forward.
Raphinha has embraced the false nine role and is thriving. The Brazilian hit a hat-trick in the 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander and leads the press and the line in equal measure. Behind and around him, the movement is constant.
Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji remain unavailable, but Flick’s blueprint is clear and ruthless.
Barcelona’s expected lineup: Joan García in goal; Eric García and Cubarsí at centre-back; Gerard Martín and Espart as full-backs; Rodri, Fermín López and Pedri controlling midfield; Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Gordon forming a fluid, aggressive front three.
They don’t just win. They suffocate.
Goals almost guaranteed
Recent history between these two points in one direction: chaos on the scoreboard. Both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings. Sevilla rarely stay quiet at home; Barcelona rarely keep things calm anywhere.
Sevilla have nine scored and six conceded in their opening six league games. They have already shipped three at home to Atlético. Barcelona, by contrast, have hit 28 in the same number of matches and show no inclination to ease off once they’re ahead.
Flick’s side have conceded in three of their last four outings. Even Levante found a way to score twice against them last weekend. The clean-sheet aura has gone, but the attacking menace has not.
That’s why the angle of Barcelona to win and both teams to score stands out at odds of 2.40 with Stake. It implies just a 41.7% chance of Barca winning while conceding, which looks generous given the patterns: Sevilla usually land a punch; Barcelona usually land four.
For those expecting another open contest, over 3.5 total goals at 1.80 with Stake also fits the script. That line has been cleared in all but one of Barcelona’s league games, and two of Sevilla’s six.
First-half storm warning
If Sevilla want anything from this game, they may have to survive the first 45 minutes without being torn apart.
