Barcelona set to sign Rodri in blockbuster deal from Manchester City
Barcelona are closing in on one of the deals of the summer, with an agreement in principle struck to bring Spain midfielder Rodri to Camp Nou in a blockbuster move from Manchester City.
The 30-year-old is set to anchor Hansi Flick’s new-look side in a transfer package worth an initial €65 million (£55m), with a further €10m (£8.5m) tied to performance-related bonuses. It is a heavyweight fee for one of Europe’s most influential midfielders – but City will not be the only club cashing in.
Atletico and Villarreal set for windfall
Thanks to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, a slice of the money will flow back to the clubs that shaped Rodri long before he became a Champions League winner in Manchester.
Under those rules, 5% of any international transfer fee is reserved for the teams that trained the player between the ages of 12 and 23. For Atletico Madrid, that translates into a tidy reward. Rodri spent seven formative years in their academy before leaving at 17, and that spell guarantees them at least €1.6m (£1.3m) from the fixed fee alone. If all the add-ons are triggered, their take could climb to around €2m (£1.7m).
Rayo Majadahonda, where Rodri first kicked a ball in organised youth football, will see nothing this time. He left their system at 11, just before the solidarity window opens.
Villarreal, though, are very much in the money. The Yellow Submarine nurtured Rodri for five key seasons, two in their youth ranks and three in the first team, before selling him back to Atletico in 2018. A year later, he made the lucrative jump to City. Now, as he prepares for Barcelona, Villarreal are again positioned to profit, this time without losing a player from their current squad.
For both Atletico and Villarreal, the payments arrive as a welcome – and largely unexpected – cash injection at a crucial point in the market.
Barcelona’s new midfield pillar
While accountants run the numbers, Flick will be thinking only about the pitch. The German coach is desperate to weave Rodri into his plans as quickly as possible, with Barcelona facing a gruelling domestic and European schedule.
Rodri’s arrival promises a new spine for Barça’s midfield: control, tempo, and a proven winner in the heart of the team. The final details of the deal are being ironed out behind the scenes, with an official announcement expected once the paperwork and payment structure are locked in.
By the time the window closes, Barcelona aim to have their new midfield general in place, City will have banked a major fee, and Atletico and Villarreal will have strengthened their own squads with money they did not have to negotiate for.
One transfer, four clubs reshaped.
