Barcelona Signs Rodri from Manchester City for €65 Million
Barcelona have struck an agreement in principle with Manchester City for the headline signing of Spain midfielder Rodri, in a deal that reshapes the European market and quietly lines the pockets of several of his former clubs.
The 30-year-old is set to swap the Etihad for Camp Nou in a move worth an initial €65 million (£55m), with a further €10m (£8.5m) tied to performance-related add-ons. It is a statement signing from Barcelona, and a sizeable piece of business for City. But they are far from the only winners.
Atletico and Villarreal cash in
Thanks to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are preparing for a lucrative windfall of their own.
Under global regulations, 5% of any international transfer fee must be distributed among the clubs that trained the player between the ages of 12 and 23. In Rodri’s case, that rule turns his development years into hard cash.
Atletico, who brought him through their academy for seven formative seasons before he left at 17, are guaranteed at least €1.6m (£1.3m) from the fixed fee alone. If every bonus clause is triggered and the full package is paid, that figure could climb towards €2m (£1.7m). Not bad for a player they no longer have to pay, coach, or select.
Rayo Majadahonda, where Rodri first kicked a ball in organised youth football, will see none of that money. He left their setup at 11, just outside the solidarity age window, and the rules are unforgiving.
Villarreal, though, are firmly on the right side of those regulations. The Yellow Submarine spent five key seasons shaping Rodri’s career, two of them in their youth ranks and three in the first team. From there he returned to Atletico in 2018, then made his big-money move to City a year later. Now, as he heads for Catalonia, Villarreal are again in line for a significant slice of the 5% pot.
For a club that has long relied on smart trading and academy production, an unexpected cash injection of this scale can influence an entire window.
Barcelona move to close the deal
Behind the scenes, the final details of Rodri’s switch to Camp Nou are being thrashed out. The framework is in place, the numbers are clear, and both clubs expect an official announcement once the last contractual wrinkles are smoothed.
Hansi Flick will not want to waste a second. The Barcelona head coach sees Rodri as a pillar for a demanding season across La Liga and Europe, a ready-made organiser to anchor his midfield and set the rhythm of a new-look side.
For City, it is the end of a hugely successful chapter. For Atletico and Villarreal, it is an unexpected payday born from years of patient development work. And for Barcelona, it is a gamble on experience and authority in the heart of the pitch.
The only question now is how quickly Rodri can turn that hefty price tag into control, calm and trophies in Catalonia.
