Cologne Firm on El Mala Amid Dortmund Talks Collapse

Cologne’s transfer chief Christian Kessler has drawn a clear line under Said El Mala’s failed move to Borussia Dortmund, insisting the collapsed deal was the product of calm negotiation rather than late drama.

According to Kessler, both clubs had long sensed they were heading for a dead end.

“It had been clear for several days that we weren't going to reach an agreement, it didn't come out of the blue for us. It was simply the outcome of very respectful discussions between the two clubs. That's football – you don't always manage to find an agreement,” he told the official Bundesliga channels.

No bust-up. No shock twist. Just two clubs who could not bridge the gap.

Kessler also made no attempt to disguise why El Mala had listened when a Champions League regular came calling. For a teenager on the rise, the lure is obvious.

“It's perfectly understandable that a player of his age would consider a move to a Champions League club,” the 40-year-old said, framing the forward’s ambition as normal rather than disloyal.

The question now is how the youngster responds. On that front, Kessler sounded emphatic. He painted a picture of a player who has parked the speculation and thrown himself back into club life.

“I don't see any disappointment in him. I'm in touch with Said almost every day, and we speak very openly about the situation. And judging by the way he conducts himself and wears our shirt, he's clearly very proud to be a Cologne player.”

For Cologne, that attitude matters as much as any transfer fee. With the window drama fading, Kessler moved to shut down fresh rumours before they start.

“I can only repeat what I've been saying for weeks: I'm convinced he’ll be playing for Cologne this season,” he said, nailing his colours to the mast over El Mala’s immediate future at RheinEnergieStadion.

That conviction, though, comes with a dose of realism. If El Mala continues his upward curve, Dortmund are unlikely to be the last heavyweight suitor.

“Players who develop well here will naturally attract interest from other clubs. This certainly won’t be the last time in our lives that we've sat around a negotiating table with Borussia Dortmund,” Kessler admitted.

For now, Cologne keep their emerging talent. The real battle starts if he turns this season into the breakout campaign everyone inside the club expects.
