Barcelona's Centre-Forward Dilemma After Kroupi Injury
Barcelona’s centre-forward puzzle has taken an unexpected and unwelcome twist.
Eli Junior Kroupi, one of the Catalan club’s main fallback options in their search for a No 9, faces up to four months out after suffering a foot fracture during Bournemouth’s pre-season camp in Austria, according to The Athletic. The 20-year-old has already undergone surgery on the fifth metatarsal – the same injury that derailed Fermin Lopez’s run-in with Barcelona last season, just before the World Cup.
For a player on the verge of a breakout move and a club preparing for European football, the timing could hardly be worse.
A rising star abruptly halted
Kroupi’s injury lands just as his stock had never been higher. In his first full Premier League season, the French Under-21 international became Bournemouth’s leading scorer under Andoni Iraola, hitting 13 league goals, five of them in the final eight matches as the Cherries surged towards Europe.
He wasn’t just padding numbers. He was deciding games, stretching defences, and giving Bournemouth a direct, ruthless edge in the final third. That late-season scoring streak helped secure UEFA Europa League qualification and turned him from an intriguing youngster into one of the division’s most talked-about emerging forwards.
Naturally, the scouts followed. Among the clubs tracking him most closely: Barcelona.
For Bournemouth, losing their top scorer for three to four months is a serious blow heading into a season that will now include European commitments. For Kroupi, it interrupts momentum at the very point where his performances had opened the door to the elite.
Barcelona’s Plan B on ice
The injury also slices straight into Barcelona’s transfer planning. Hansi Flick’s side have been working the market for a central striker, with Julián Álvarez identified as the priority target. Kroupi sat just behind him on the list – the preferred Plan B if a deal for the Manchester City forward proved impossible.
Talks had already moved beyond simple admiration. Reports indicated Barcelona had submitted two offers for Kroupi, both rejected by Bournemouth, who have been adamant they do not want to sell one of their brightest young assets.
Barcelona’s sporting department liked what they saw: age, ceiling, versatility in central areas, and the capacity to grow into a long-term solution at the top of Flick’s attack. Kroupi fit the profile of a modern Barça forward – mobile, technically clean, and with an eye for goal.
Now, that entire scenario is clouded. With Kroupi expected to be sidelined until late October or November, any move this summer would mean signing a striker who cannot help immediately and whose short-term form is an unknown. For a club under financial pressure and in need of instant impact, that is no small complication.
A transfer strategy under pressure
This setback forces Barcelona into a delicate recalibration. If the pursuit of Julián Álvarez stalls or collapses, the straightforward pivot to Kroupi is no longer there. Do they gamble on a long-term talent who will miss the opening months, or do they rip up the shortlist and look elsewhere before the window shuts?
The market rarely waits. Nor does a season.
For Bournemouth, the priority is clear: guide their young star through recovery and hope he returns with the same sharpness that lit up the Premier League last year.
