Benjamin Sesko: A Fresh Start at Manchester United

Benjamin Sesko walks through the corridors at Carrington these days with a different stride. Lighter. Freer. The nagging pain in his shin that stalked his debut season has finally released its grip, and the Manchester United forward believes that chapter is closed.

For months, that injury dictated everything. It cut short his first campaign, wrecked his pre-season and turned what should have been a springboard year into a stop-start grind. Now, after an impressive return to the starting XI in the Champions League, the 23-year-old is convinced his body has caught up with his ambitions.

The road back was slow by design. Sesko admits the medical staff held him back when every instinct told him to rush. He wanted minutes; they wanted certainty.

"It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse because this was kind of a problem," he explained. "We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin."

This wasn’t a freak twist or a one-off collision. The issue had been brewing. The Slovenian traces it back to the closing stretch of last season, when the demands of Premier League football collided with one heavy kick and his own relentless work-rate.

"I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it," he said.

The timing hurt. Sesko had fought through the usual turbulence of a first year in England and still found a way to score 12 goals, a respectable return in a new league, new country and under the microscope of Old Trafford. Just as he looked ready to kick on, his body forced him to stop.

Now he feels the reset is complete.

A new life, finally settled

If the shin was the physical problem, the wider challenge was everything else. New language. New city. New expectations. Manchester can swallow young players whole if they arrive before they’re ready.

Sesko sounds like a man who has come out the other side.

"Way better, especially than last season," he said when asked about his current mood. "I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything."

There’s no hint of homesickness now, no talk of adjustment. Just a player who feels he belongs at a club that once seemed a distant dream.

A long courtship with Old Trafford

United have known about Sesko for years. Scouts flagged him as a teenager, a 16-year-old prospect with the frame and instincts to lead the line at the highest level. The path from there to the Theatre of Dreams, though, was never going to be a straight line.

Instead of leaping straight into the Premier League spotlight, Sesko and his camp chose the scenic route: Red Bull Salzburg, then Leipzig, then finally Manchester. It was a deliberate plan, not a detour.

"It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important," he said. "It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here."

Now the steps are behind him. The injury, he believes, is behind him too. What remains is the stage he always wanted and a body, at last, ready to handle everything that comes with it.
