Bilal Nadir Joins Hamburg from Marseille on Free Transfer
Hamburg have moved again in the summer market, landing Moroccan midfielder Bilal Nadir on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille as they continue to reshape their squad.
The 20-year-old becomes the German club’s second signing of the window, following forward Patson Daka through the door. Hamburg announced the deal on their official X account, confirming that Nadir arrives on a long-term contract after leaving Marseille at the end of his spell there.
The move was sealed at Hamburg’s training camp in Austria. Nadir passed his medical before putting pen to paper in front of club officials, then posed with his new shirt. He will wear the number 4 – a statement number for a player the club clearly see as central to their midfield plans.
“I am very happy to become a Hamburg player, and I can't wait to meet the club's fans and play for this city,” Nadir said after signing, his first words as part of the German side.
Inside the club, the excitement is clear. Sporting board member Kathleen Kruger underlined why Hamburg pushed to get the deal done, highlighting both his profile and his personality.
“Bilal is a versatile player who can fill several roles in midfield. His arrival gives us greater flexibility, and he also has a calm personality and fits in with our style of play and our values,” she explained, framing him as a piece that can shift across the central areas as the season demands.
Sporting director Claus Costa echoed that view, focusing on the qualities that have marked Nadir out since his teenage years in France. The left-footer, standing at 1.86 metres, has been praised for his technical and artistic touch on the ball, the kind of midfielder who can link phases and keep the game moving with intelligence.
Nadir’s path to Hamburg has been steady rather than explosive. Born in Nice on 28 November 2003, he came through the academy at his hometown club, learning his trade in one of France’s most respected youth systems. In the summer of 2021, Marseille moved to bring him in, seeing long-term potential in his profile.
The breakthrough came in 2023. Nadir stepped up to the first team and, across all competitions, made 53 official appearances for Marseille. He scored two goals and supplied five assists, numbers that only tell part of the story but underline his growing influence in a top European league.
He also gained a taste of the biggest stages. The midfielder featured four times in the Champions League and twice in the Europa League, experience that Hamburg will hope translates quickly into composure in the Bundesliga’s most intense moments.
On the international scene, Nadir’s story is still being written. Eligible for both France and Morocco, he has already worn the colours of several French youth national teams and represented Morocco at under-23 level. In March 2025, Morocco called him into the senior squad for the first time, though he is yet to make his full international debut.
For now, his focus turns to Hamburg, a new league and a new challenge. A tall, left-footed midfielder with European experience and a point to prove, handed the number 4 shirt and the trust of a club eager to climb.
