Slaven Bilic Criticizes Croatia's Lack of Aggression After Heavy Spain Defeat
Slaven Bilic expressed his frustration after Croatia suffered a heavy defeat to Spain in Seville, sharply criticizing his team for their lack of aggression. The coach questioned the mentality of his rebuilding squad as they struggled against the reigning world champions.
Frustration Over Team's Passivity
The Croatian manager did not hide his disappointment with how his players approached the match. He suggested that the team seemed intimidated by Spain’s reputation and failed to show the competitive edge expected from a nation with such a strong football tradition.
"It was a difficult night for us. We were bad in every way, we are disappointed. We can find some excuse in the fact that it is Spain, the world champion, and that our team is new, but we cannot play with such a lack of aggression, as if we were here just to celebrate their winning of the World Cup. We can’t come here just to be part of the celebration. That’s not us," Bilic said.
Defensive Struggles and Bright Spots
The match began badly for Croatia, conceding almost immediately. Although they managed to equalize briefly, defensive errors, especially during set-pieces, allowed Spain to regain control. Bilic highlighted the team’s failure to remain composed and disciplined under pressure, which proved costly.
"When you concede a goal in the first minute against the world champions, you need a few minutes to recover. We equalized, and when we needed strength, calmness and intelligence to disrupt them, we conceded another goal from a set piece, and maybe it should have been the other way around," he added.
Despite the disappointing defensive display, Bilic pointed out some individual positives. Players like Kovacic, Perisic, and Beljo showed flashes of quality, with Beljo contributing a goal and putting in a good performance overall.
A Reality Check for Bilic’s Rebuilding Team
The defeat offered a tough lesson for the new generation of Croatian players. Bilic remains confident in their technical abilities but admitted the team’s mental approach and execution fell short of what is needed at this level.
"We put this team together for a reason. On paper, the guys who played tonight have everything, but we showed very little," Bilic remarked.
Upcoming Crucial Match Against England
After the loss to Spain, Croatia now prepares for a pivotal match against England on Saturday. Both teams are level on three points in their UEFA Nations League group, chasing Spain, who lead with six points. Spain will face Czechia before traveling to play Croatia next Tuesday, so this encounter against England carries significant weight for qualification hopes.
