Brown Bears Dominate Yet Settle for Draw Against Rhode Island
KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown dominated almost everything but the scoreboard.
Senior forward Angelina Vargas struck early, the Bears poured on pressure for 90 minutes, yet a stubborn Rhode Island side clawed back for a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
The result keeps Brown’s record in the state of Rhode Island spotless in the loss column. The Bears move to 4-2-1 overall and remain unbeaten in-state at 4-0-1, with a perfect 4-0-0 mark at home and a three-match unbeaten run (2-0-1). Rhode Island, forced to defend for long stretches, leaves at 2-3-3 but with a point that felt hard-earned.
Vargas strikes, Bears swarm
Brown set the tone immediately. The Bears pressed high, pinned the Rams back, and by the 12th minute, they had their breakthrough.
On the right flank, junior defender Kyra Treanor beat her marker and drove into space. She whipped a low ball across the six-yard box, where Vargas had timed her run perfectly. One touch, one driven finish, and Brown led 1-0. It was Vargas’ third goal of the season and the sixth of her career, while Treanor picked up her second assist of the year and third overall.
The goal only sharpened Brown’s edge.
Wave after wave followed. Vargas forced another save in the 14th minute. Senior forward Joy Okonye hammered a shot on target in the 25th. Senior Corine Gregory added another effort in the 26th. Sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy tested the keeper in the 33rd.
By halftime, the numbers told the story of Brown’s control: 11-1 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal, 5-2 in corner kicks. Vargas led the assault with four shots and three on frame. Okonye added three shots, two on target. The Rams were hanging on.
At the back, Brown’s defensive core barely put a foot wrong. Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle all went the full 90 minutes, snuffing out counters and recycling possession to keep the pressure on.
Rams hit back against the run of play
Rhode Island, though, refused to fold.
As the second half wore on, the match shifted from one-way traffic to something closer to a contest. The Rams finally found a foothold and, in the 68th minute, they punished Brown’s one lapse.
Inside the penalty area, URI’s Megan Steinbach seized her chance, finding enough space to fire past sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter and level the match at 1-1. It was only the Rams’ second shot of the night, but it changed everything.
Etter, who finished with one save, had been largely a spectator. Suddenly, Brown’s dominance on the stat sheet meant nothing on the scoreboard.
Rhode Island nearly flipped the script completely in the 83rd minute, when a rising effort crashed off the crossbar, inches away from turning a defensive struggle into a stunning home win.
Late surge, no winner
Shaken but not rattled, Brown pushed back.
The Bears reclaimed territory and turned the final minutes into a siege. They earned corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes, crowding the box and testing the Rams’ resolve. Guy then forced one last save with a shot on target in the 90th minute, a low drive that could have rescued all three points.
It never came.
By the final whistle, Brown held a 17-3 advantage in shots, 10-2 in shots on goal, and a 10-4 edge in corners. Okonye finished with game highs in shots (six) and shots on goal (four). Vargas and Guy each added four attempts, with Vargas putting three on frame and Guy two.
The performance screamed victory. The scoreline did not.
Eyes on Hofstra
Next up, Brown heads back on the road for its final non-league away match of the season, traveling to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. The Bears carry momentum, an unbeaten run, and a sense of unfinished business.
