Bruno Guimaraes Set for First Arsenal Start Against Manchester City

Bruno Guimaraes is set for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on a huge stage against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

The Brazilian midfielder, eased in with a substitute appearance in the final pre-season outing against Como, is now pushing to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI in Cardiff. Arsenal’s midfield has been makeshift all summer. That changes on Sunday.

Arsenal’s big guns return

Arsenal’s squad will look far more like the real thing. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all back in contention after missing the entire pre-season schedule.

None of the trio has played a minute this summer, having only just returned to training at the start of the week after an extended post-World Cup break. The club have carefully built them back up at London Colney over the past few days, and the plan is clear: get them involved against City, but don’t overload them.

Guimaraes to anchor a reshaped midfield

That caution opens the door for Guimaraes to take on a central role from the start. With minutes for Saka, Rice and Zubimendi likely to be managed, the Brazilian is expected to line up alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has been one of the constants of Arsenal’s summer, starting every pre-season game.

Up front, Arteta tends to trust Kai Havertz when the stakes rise. The German has become a go-to option in Arsenal’s biggest fixtures, and that pattern is likely to continue at the Cardiff City Stadium.
