Bruno Guimaraes Set for Premier League Debut as Arsenal Faces Sunderland
Mikel Arteta looks ready to finally unleash Bruno Guimaraes from the start in the Premier League – and he could not have picked a more hostile setting.
Arsenal travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday night with a £75million signing who has, so far, been eased in gently. Minor injury niggles have slowed Guimaraes’ integration, but his cameo in midweek against Napoli has shifted the picture. He looked sharp. He looked ready.
Now comes the real test.
Newcastle past, Sunderland noise
If Guimaraes does start, the narrative writes itself. A former Newcastle midfielder walking out in red and white at Sunderland under the lights. The noise will be ferocious. The reception will be bitter.
Arteta will not care.
The plan is simple: pair Guimaraes with Declan Rice at the base of midfield and tighten Arsenal’s grip on games like this. That partnership would give Arsenal extra control on the ball and more bite without it, a combination Arteta has been chasing since the summer.
The expectation inside the club is that this is the moment Guimaraes steps from expensive bench weapon to genuine core piece.
Fresh legs after Naples
Arteta is also ready to rotate after the 1-0 win away to Napoli. The schedule demands it, and so does the squad depth he has been given.
Christos Tzolis is in line to return to the starting XI, having had limited minutes in Europe. Kai Havertz should also come back into the side, adding height, pressing and late runs into the box. At left-back, Riccardo Calafiori is tipped to reclaim his spot from Piero Hincapie, restoring a more natural balance down that flank.
The shape should remain familiar: a 4-2-3-1 built on Rice and, potentially, Guimaraes, with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard operating in their usual roles behind the striker.
Defensive puzzle for Arteta
At the back, Arteta’s decisions are more delicate.
Ben White is available despite going off late against Napoli, a relief given his importance both as a defender and a key outlet in Arsenal’s build-up. The right-back is expected to start if he comes through the final training session unscathed.
Jurrien Timber is edging closer after a long spell out. Arteta confirmed the defender has been training with the group for a few days and “looks in good shape”, but the staff must decide whether this is the night to bring him back into a matchday squad or wait a little longer.
Cristhian Mosquera is also pushing. He is understood to be slightly behind Timber in terms of readiness, with Arteta suggesting his return will come in this game or the next. The sense is that he is close, just not quite at full tilt.
One situation is clear. William Saliba will not feature. The Frenchman remains sidelined for an extended period after aggravating a back problem on international duty earlier in the summer. Arsenal are relieved he avoided surgery, but they must still cope without one of the pillars of their defence.
