Caicedo Out as Chelsea Prepares for Leeds Clash

Chelsea head into Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United without Moises Caicedo once again. No drama, no disguise. He is not ready, and Xabi Alonso refuses to pretend otherwise.

Caicedo sat out the first two games of the season, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before limping off. He missed the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well, and Chelsea have decided they are done with rolling the dice on his fitness. Alonso has already spoken about not repeating “the same mistake”. The message inside Cobham is blunt: no gamble, not in September.

The only consolation is that the club do not see this as a “longer-term” problem. That might soothe nerves for the months ahead, but it does nothing for Chelsea’s midfield options against Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

He is not the only absentee. Marco Palestra is also out. Jordan Henderson is still sidelined with the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha will not feature either. For a cup tie that Chelsea insist they want to take seriously, it is a thin list in key areas.

Alonso Draws a Line on Risk

Alonso has been clear about Palestra’s situation, and there is no cloak-and-dagger here. Chelsea rate him. They just will not rush him.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

That is the frustration: new signing, strong pre-season, then a setback before he could properly start. But the bigger picture is obvious. Chelsea’s season will not be defined by a Carabao Cup tie in early September, and Alonso is managing his squad like a coach who knows it.

The priority sits just a few days away. Hull City at home in the league on Saturday carries more weight, and the team selection against Leeds will reflect that.

Rotation on the Cards

With that in mind, changes are coming. Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal game with a minor fitness concern, is back and available. He is expected to come straight into the side.

Mike Penders is in line to start in goal, giving him a chance to stake a claim under the lights at Stamford Bridge. At full-back and out wide, Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are both pushing to be involved from the start, offering fresh legs and a different look down the flanks.

Chelsea’s predicted XI to face Leeds reads: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

It is a side that mixes promise with pragmatism. Enough quality to win the tie. Enough rotation to keep key players fresh for Hull.

Straightforward Team News, Serious Intent

The injury bulletin is brutally simple:

Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
Doubts: none.

Kick-off against Leeds is at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will rotate, but he will not throw the competition away. Chelsea want progression, and they want it without sacrificing their league rhythm.

The line is drawn: no shortcuts with fitness, no excuses with ambition. How long they can hold that balance as the fixtures pile up will shape far more than just one night under the Bridge lights.
