Celtic's Pursuit of Radek Vitek Intensifies
Celtic’s search for a new No.1 has taken a sharp, promising turn – and this time the noise is coming from the goalkeeper himself.
Radek Vitek, the Manchester United prospect long admired in Glasgow, has made it clear he is ready to walk away from Old Trafford this summer, permanently if necessary, in pursuit of regular first‑team football.
The 22-year-old, on United’s books since 2020 and tied to the club until 2028, has done his time on the road. Accrington Stanley, FC Blau-Weiss Linz, Bristol City – each spell a step in his development, each one a reminder that his path to United’s senior side remains blocked. Despite his progress, the former Czech Republic Under-20 international has yet to make a competitive appearance for the first team.
Celtic, meanwhile, have a vacancy that is becoming more urgent by the week.
O’Neill wants a challenger, not a passenger
Martin O’Neill did not bother to dress it up when he spoke last week. Celtic are short in goal, and he knows it.
“We need another goalkeeper,” he said, as quoted in The Daily Record on July 15. “We’ve only got the two young lads, we’ve got Ross [Doohan] and we’ve got [Viljami] Sinisalo, so we definitely need another goalkeeper. You need competition for places as well.
“I thought Sinisalo did really fine for us under really trying circumstances coming in, replacing the big fellow, so he’s done fine at this minute.
“That was last season… new season.”
It was a pointed reminder. What happened last year doesn’t guarantee anything now.
Pressed on whether he wanted someone in the mould of Kasper Schmeichel or Joe Hart – experienced, authoritative, a presence – O’Neill’s answer underlined the profile he is chasing.
“That’s definitely a thought. I don’t want an older goalkeeper who thinks, ‘Well, I’m just going to be number two.’
“I want somebody to be threatening. It has to be.
“Even if it wasn’t an older goalkeeper, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be thinking of somebody younger.”
That description fits Vitek neatly: young, ambitious, and in no mood to sit on a bench.
Celtic interest grows as Vitek breaks cover
The connection between club and player is no longer speculation from the fringes. Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has a sizeable following on X, reported on July 11 that Celtic are interested in the Manchester United keeper after his standout loan spell at Bristol City last season.
“Celtic are interested in Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek after he impressed on loan at Bristol City last season,” O’Rourke posted.
Since then, the goalkeeper himself has moved the story on.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Vitek made his stance unambiguous.
“I’m ready to go somewhere again and hopefully be number one,” he said.
Asked whether that meant another loan or a permanent exit, he did not flinch.
“I’m ready for both, to be fair. It depends on what the club wants and also on the options.
“There has been a few interests on the table.
“We’re hoping to choose the best one and hopefully it will happen soon.”
This is not a player clinging to the comfort of a big-club contract. It is a goalkeeper pushing for a decision.
A breakout year, and a stalled plan
Vitek’s determination is rooted in what he has already proved. Last season at Bristol City was not just productive; it was decorated. He swept the board in the club’s end-of-season awards, collecting Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.
For a 22-year-old on loan from a Premier League giant, that is a serious statement. Teammates trusted him. Supporters backed him. A Championship club built a campaign around him and rewarded him accordingly.
His mindset has not shifted since. Back in March, also speaking to BBC Sport, Vitek outlined his priority for the coming year.
“My mind is the same,” he said. “I want to play every week and that’s the goal for next season.”
The plan, according to BBC Sport, was for him to sort his future before Manchester United reported back for pre-season. That timeline has already slipped. Vitek was part of the United side that lost 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki at the weekend, a reminder that until a deal is done, he remains in limbo.
Yet his message has only grown louder: he is ready to go, ready to be a No.1, ready to leave Old Trafford behind if that is what it takes.
A window of opportunity for Celtic
For Celtic, the situation could hardly be clearer. They need a goalkeeper who does not fear competition, who arrives to challenge rather than to make up the numbers. O’Neill has spelled that out in public.
Vitek, on the other side of the equation, wants exactly that fight. He is not asking for guarantees, only for the chance to earn them.
There are “a few interests on the table,” as he put it. Celtic are one of them. The decision now rests between a club that craves authority between the posts and a young keeper who has outgrown the waiting game.
If the Scottish champions want a hungry, decorated, upwardly mobile No.1, this is their moment to move.
