Champions League: Italy's Stars Shine on Tuesday Night
The Champions League is back on Tuesday night, and so is the spotlight on Italy’s present and future. As the 2026-27 campaign kicks off, eight Azzurri hopefuls are scattered across Europe’s biggest stages, all with something to prove before the clock even hits 20.00 BST.
Early curtain-raiser in Bruges
The first Italian storyline of the evening starts in Belgium.
At 17.45 BST, Club Brugge host Aston Villa, and Nicolo Tresoldi is expected to lead the line for the home side. Still eligible for both Germany and Italy at senior level, the 21-year-old continues to push his case in front of two federations and a growing list of scouts.

Later, the focus swings to Portugal.
Manchester City travel to Porto for a 20.00 BST kick-off, and Italy’s No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to start in goal for the Premier League champions. The move to City has put him in the thick of the trophy hunt again, and nights like this are exactly why he is there.
A hostile away ground, a demanding manager, and a team built to go deep in the competition: Donnarumma stands at the heart of it, carrying Italy’s flag into one of the favourites’ dressing rooms.
Bernabeu blockbuster: Inter’s Italian core
The headline act, though, is in Madrid.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, 15-time European champions Real Madrid face reigning Serie A and Coppa Italia holders Inter in a heavyweight clash at 20.00 BST. Cristian Chivu is expected to lean heavily on his Italian backbone.
Alessandro Bastoni should marshal the defence, while Nicolo Barella will drive the Nerazzurri midfield in one of the toughest fixtures of the entire league phase. Pio Esposito is likely to start on the bench, but his presence offers another Italian thread in Inter’s attack if Chivu needs fresh legs and fearlessness late on.
One notable absentee changes the usual picture. Federico Dimarco, a regular source of width and delivery for both Inter and Italy, has been left in Milan after knee pain in the build-up to the game. His omission strips Inter of one of their most reliable left-sided weapons on a night when every detail matters.
Dortmund’s young Italian trio
While the giants collide in Spain and Portugal, another story quietly unfolds in Germany.
Borussia Dortmund host Villarreal at 20.00 BST, and three Italy youngsters could be involved: Luca Reggiani, Filippo Mane and Samuele Inacio. All eyes, though, are on Mane.
Pre-match reports suggest Niko Kovac is considering the defender for a place in the starting XI, a significant show of trust in a player still at the beginning of his senior journey.
