Cheick Doucouré Set for Crystal Palace Comeback After 20 Months
Crystal Palace will finally get one of their cornerstone players back on the pitch on Tuesday night.
Cheick Doucouré, once the heartbeat of their midfield and the club’s Player of the Year in his debut 2022-23 campaign, is set for his first senior appearance in almost 20 months in the Carabao Cup tie against Middlesbrough. For him, it ends a brutal stretch of bad luck. For Palace, it feels like getting a leader back.
A comeback 20 months in the making
Doucouré’s rise at Selhurst Park stalled in November 2023. In a 2-1 defeat at Luton Town, he ruptured his Achilles – the kind of injury that doesn’t just halt a season, it questions a career.
He fought back. Returned. Put together 13 appearances. Then, in January last year, another hammer blow: a torn meniscus. Another long rehab. Another reset.
Only now, after proving his fitness with the Under-21s at the end of last season and coming through a full pre-season without a setback, is the 26-year-old finally ready to rejoin the first-team fold. Palace have missed his bite and balance in midfield, and not just because of what he brings on the ball. Before those injuries, he had been a serious target for Liverpool in the summer of 2023. His ceiling was clear. So was his importance.
Sage gets his midfield general back
Manager Pierre Sage did not bother hiding his delight. Speaking before the third-round tie, he painted the picture of a player who has been waiting for this moment with almost childlike impatience.
“When I told him he would be with us today, his smile was incredible,” Sage said. “I think his reaction was as if I gave him $1million. I like this kind of reaction because that's for me the start of how we play football, how we love this game and the only thing he wanted is to come back with the team. This is the first step and he will play a little bit on Tuesday for sure.”
Those few minutes against Middlesbrough will be Doucouré’s first competitive action since a 2-0 win over Leicester City on January 15, 2025. For a squad trying to generate early-season momentum, the emotional lift of seeing him back in a Palace shirt could be as valuable as anything on the tactics board.
Balancing rotation with rhythm
Sage wants to use the cup to reintroduce key figures like Doucouré, but he is not about to rip up his starting XI just for the sake of it. He has learned the hard way what sweeping changes can do to a side’s cohesion.
“I'm not really fond of big rotations because every time I did that I'm unhappy at the end of the game, not especially with the result but sometimes with the (lack of) coordination of the players,” he admitted. “But at the beginning of the season we have to respect all the commitment of all players during the session and it's maybe the opportunity for them to show it. We have to win this game because we are ambitious in this competition too and that's not only about rotation.”
So Palace walk a fine line: respecting the Carabao Cup, rewarding squad players, but keeping their structure intact. Doucouré, eased back in “a little bit” on Tuesday, sits right at the centre of that plan.
Palace chase another cup run
The Eagles have not exactly flown out of the blocks in the Premier League. One win and two defeats leave them 13th, still searching for rhythm and consistency.
But this is not the Palace of old. This is a club that has started to collect silverware: the FA Cup in 2024-25, the FA Community Shield in 2025, and the UEFA Conference League last season. They know what a cup run can do for belief, for atmosphere, for a campaign’s direction.
A serious tilt at the Carabao Cup fits that mindset. Middlesbrough in the third round is the first hurdle. Ipswich Town at home in the league follows, with Palace chasing back-to-back Premier League wins after a gritty 3-2 victory over Fulham on Saturday.
By then, if all goes to plan, Doucouré will no longer be the long-term absentee on the rehab table. He will be back where Palace always needed him – in the middle of the pitch, shaping what this season can become.
