Chelsea Hijacks Arsenal's Move for Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have landed Morgan Rogers in a dramatic late move that has left Arsenal stunned and scrambling for alternatives, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Chelsea go “all in” to hijack Arsenal’s plan
For much of the summer, Arsenal believed they were in control of the race for the Aston Villa forward. Personal terms were not an issue, Romano reports, and Mikel Arteta even held direct talks with Rogers over recent months. Inside the club, the 22-year-old was viewed as a serious, multi-functional attacking target — someone who could operate anywhere across the frontline or in the pockets behind the striker.
Arsenal’s recruitment drive had already moved forward with a deal for Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge edging closer, and Rogers was supposed to be the next piece. The idea was clear: add another versatile, high-ceiling attacker without smashing through their valuation.
Then Chelsea arrived.
Over the weekend, they agreed to pay £117m for Rogers and tied him to a six-year contract with an option for a further season. Romano says the deal is “completed” and due to be signed on Monday, with Chelsea and Aston Villa already exchanging documents.
Aston Villa view the fee as “excellent business”. Chelsea believe they have secured a “fantastic player” for the long term. Arsenal, though, have been left on the outside, having tried to negotiate the price down.
Romano insists Arsenal’s intention was to bid in the region of £90m, pushing to a maximum of around £100m — but never to the £117m Chelsea put on the table. Chelsea, sensing the opening and the risk of a late counter from north London, chose to act with ruthless speed.
They went all in. No drawn-out haggling, no extended stand-off with Villa. Romano explains that Chelsea’s strategy was simple: close the deal within 24 hours to shut the door on any Arsenal fightback. That is exactly what they did.
For Arsenal, Romano describes it as a “big surprise”. A key target gone, and gone quickly. Now they have to react.
Arsenal pivot as Diomande race heats up
Attention at the Emirates has already turned elsewhere. Arsenal have made enquiries for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as they look to reshape their attacking shortlist after the Rogers blow.
They are not alone.
Romano says Paris Saint-Germain have had a verbal agreement on personal terms with Diomande for three or four weeks. The relationship between PSG and RB Leipzig is strong after the Xavi Simons deal and other recent business, but there is still no agreement on the fee.
It’s a familiar tension in modern transfers: player keen, terms sorted, but the clubs still apart on the numbers. Romano even draws the parallel with Arsenal’s pursuit of Rogers — personal terms were never the issue there either, until Chelsea stormed in and closed the deal.
With Diomande, PSG remain “clear favourites”, Romano reports, but the story is far from finished. More clubs are calling Leipzig “every day” to check the conditions of a deal and see if they can step into the race.
Arsenal are among them. They have made their move in recent days, joining a growing list of suitors working behind the scenes.
Now the pressure sits squarely on PSG. They have the player’s approval. They have the head start. But as Arsenal have just been reminded with Rogers, in this market hesitation carries a price.
