Chelsea Weigh Loan Options for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea are working on a loan move for Mykhailo Mudryk as the winger searches for regular football and full fitness after almost two years in the wilderness.

The 25-year-old has not played a competitive game since November 2024, his career abruptly halted by a four-year suspension following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. The case has since been resolved by agreement, clearing the way for his return, but the gap on his record is stark: 20 months without a meaningful minute.

Chelsea have eased him back in during pre-season, handing him substitute appearances on their tour of Asia against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim. Flashes of his old acceleration were there, but so was the rust. For a player once billed as one of Europe’s most explosive wide talents, the message from club and player was the same: he needs games, not cameos.

That reality framed the conversations held at the end of the tour. In those meetings, Mudryk agreed to leave Stamford Bridge on loan before the transfer deadline on 1 September, accepting that his route back to peak level is unlikely to run through Chelsea’s crowded forward line this season.

A move to Strasbourg has been floated, a natural option given the shared BlueCo ownership with Chelsea and the French club’s need for attacking quality. The structure is simple, the relationship already in place. Yet Mudryk’s own preference points elsewhere. He would rather test himself again in the Premier League, ideally at another English top-flight side where he can adapt without leaving the country or the intensity of the league he originally came to conquer.

Interest is not confined to England. Several clubs have emerged as potential destinations, including leading sides in Italy, where his direct running and one‑v‑one ability could find space in more tactical systems. For Chelsea, a spell abroad or at a mid-table Premier League club offers the same core benefit: a season of football that he has been denied by suspension and circumstance.

Beneath all of this sits the scale of Chelsea’s original commitment. Mudryk is tied to the club until 2031, part of the wave of ultra-long contracts that defined their early recruitment under new ownership. He arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m, a fee that spoke to potential more than production.

Now the equation is simpler. Before Chelsea can work out whether that investment will ever truly pay off, Mudryk needs something far more basic than hype or headlines.

He needs a team, a league, and a season that finally lets him play.
