The crucial moment came when Reece James, who transitioned from right-back to midfield and had a solid showing for most of the game, failed to mark captain Martin Odegaard for Arsenal’s winning goal. James had played nearly half of last season in midfield, and Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence in his potential to become one of the world’s best midfielders. Still, the decision to place two converted right-backs in central midfield speaks volumes about Chelsea's depth in that area.
Replacing midfielder Romeo Lavia with Malo Gusto, another right-back by trade, in the second half only underscored the shortage. Chelsea’s lack of creativity on the bench was evident as Mikel Arteta's substitutions steered Arsenal to victory. "You look at Lavia, who was injured a lot last season. The front line are going to send fear throughout the league but behind that you see the midfield and they’re playing right-backs there," said Ashley Young, speaking to BBC Sport. "Teams will be seeing the game today, knowing Chelsea will sit back with men behind the ball, but there are still spaces through the lines, and Arsenal exploited that."
The Missing Link: Caicedo’s Absence
A major factor in Chelsea’s midfield woes is the absence of Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian midfielder broke down just 11 minutes into a substitute appearance against Brighton and is sidelined with an unspecified injury. Caicedo had been a near-ever-present in Chelsea's lineup over the past three seasons, missing only two games due to minor knocks or illness.
Alonso hinted at caution regarding Caicedo’s recovery, stating, "Probably last week we brought him back too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again." Whether Chelsea had doubts about his fitness while pursuing other midfielders remains unclear.
On transfer deadline day, Chelsea faced setbacks. Their £47m bid for Lamine Camara was blocked by Monaco at the last minute, frustrating the club's management. Earlier, bids up to £64m for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott were rejected, and an attempt to sign France international Manu Kone was stopped by Roma’s coach.

With Gusto starting in midfield, Chelsea’s possession dropped to just 25.6% in their narrow 4-3 win over Brighton—their lowest since records began in 2003-04. Alonso insists five midfielders are enough for the season without European football, but conceding seven goals in three games suggests defensive solidity needs improvement.
Bright Spots Amid Challenges
There were positives. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers scored early against Arsenal, becoming the first Chelsea player since Eden Hazard in 2018-19 to either score or assist in each of the first three Premier League games of a season. Chelsea’s performance was arguably one of their better ones against Arsenal despite a long winless streak stretching to ten games.
Though Chelsea currently trail Arsenal by 33 points after finishing 10th last season, Alonso remains hopeful. He acknowledged the defeat hurts but insisted it won’t affect the team's mindset or mood, emphasizing the journey ahead.
"We came to win. We knew that we were not that far, but it went their way. It hurts, [we’re] disappointed for sure. But this is the first defeat, this is going to be a long way and it doesn’t have a big impact on our mood and mindset," Alonso said after the match.
Looking Ahead
Arsenal remain the benchmark Chelsea aims to reach. Despite snapping up promising talent like Rogers, Chelsea’s inability to secure a midfielder on deadline day may have exposed a gap. Alonso described the summer as 'phase one'—if Caicedo’s return does not fix the midfield challenges, questions will arise about not replacing Fernandez sooner and whether January’s transfer window will see renewed efforts to strengthen the squad.
