Chelsea's Late Decision on Moises Caicedo's Fitness Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Chelsea will leave it late on Moises Caicedo’s fitness, with a final call on the midfielder not due until Saturday – just 24 hours before they face the Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He missed the opening league win over Fulham, then sat out the Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town in midweek. When he did finally get on the pitch, coming off the bench in the 68th minute of Sunday’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, his night lasted only 14 minutes.

Caicedo went down, needed treatment on the turf, then walked off under his own steam. The problem, though, keeps coming back. At Cobham, that repetition has set alarm bells ringing.

Cautious Alonso waits on key lieutenant

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso cut a cautious figure whenever Caicedo’s name came up. This is not just another squad player. The Ecuador international was central to Chelsea’s structure last season, even as they stumbled to 10th, and he now wears the armband when Reece James is absent.

Since arriving from Brighton in August 2023, Caicedo has already amassed 149 appearances in blue and grown into one of the dressing room’s leaders. Losing him on the eve of a London derby, with both sides perfect from two games, would be a major blow.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, refusing to be drawn into early conclusions. He urged calm around the situation while the medical team completes its work. “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

A rebuilt midfield faces early test

Chelsea’s midfield has been reshaped around Alonso’s ideas since Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City. The club moved quickly in the market, bringing in Valentin Barco and experienced campaigner Jordan Henderson to ensure the manager was not left short of options.

The profile has changed. So has the balance.

Alonso likes what he sees. “[We have] different qualities, personalities,” he said as he weighed up his choices. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”

That mix of youthful legs and seasoned know-how will be tested immediately. Arsenal arrive with wins over Coventry City and Aston Villa behind them. Chelsea, for their part, have edged past Fulham and Brighton. Something has to give.

Cover and contingencies

If Saturday’s fitness test does not go Caicedo’s way, Alonso already has contingency plans. He insists his tactical blueprint is not tied to one player, however influential.

He pointed to Romeo Lavia and Reece James as alternative pieces who can help execute his ideas, and even floated a more adventurous solution. “We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” Alonso said.

That willingness to shuffle the deck hints at a manager convinced by his squad’s versatility. Whether it is enough to keep pace with the champions without his midfield enforcer, he will discover on Sunday.
