Chelsea Nears Deal for Pep Chavarría as Cucurella Successor
Chelsea are on the brink of completing a deal for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarría in a move worth around £16.3m (€19m) plus add-ons, as the club continue to reshape their defence after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid.
Talks between the clubs have dragged on for more than a month, but the final details are now being tied up. Chelsea identified Chavarría early as the man to step into the void at left-back, a profile they felt could balance a squad loaded with youthful promise but short on seasoned, battle-tested options.
At 28, Chavarría brings exactly that. He is not a prospect. He is a finished article entering his prime.
Last season he played 44 games in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano, an ever-present outlet down the flank and a cornerstone of their structure on and off the ball. He also started in the club’s biggest night of recent times – the Conference League final – where Rayo fell 1-0 to Crystal Palace. The result stung, but the stage underlined the level he has grown into.

Chavarría’s rise at Rayo says a lot about the type of full-back Chelsea are buying.
He arrived in 2022 under Andoni Iraola, a coach whose teams run hard, press high and demand relentless intensity from wide defenders. Iraola’s full-backs are not decorative pieces; they are engines. Chavarría thrived in that environment.
Initially valued for his ability to overlap and provide width, he has since expanded his game. He no longer just hugs the touchline and sprints up and down. He has become more comfortable underlapping into central pockets, stepping into midfield zones and linking play, adding nuance to the raw energy that first caught the eye.
What has never changed is the work-rate. In LaLiga, he forged a reputation as one of the hardest-working full-backs in the division, a player who will happily shuttle 90 minutes every week and still find a late run in stoppage time.
Inigo Perez, who has worked with Chavarría for three seasons at Rayo, has helped refine that edge. Under him, Chavarría developed into a modern full-back involved in every phase: build-up, progression, final third, recovery. The player has described Perez as the best coach he has worked with, and the evidence is there in the breadth of his responsibilities.
Numbers that fit Chelsea’s needs

Chavarría was a key outlet for Rayo in LaLiga, recording over 2,000 touches and providing a steady stream of deliveries from the left. He ranked among the top dozen players in the league for crosses from open play and corners won, constantly forcing defenders to turn and face their own goal.
But his role was not purely attacking. He also sat among the top dozen players for blocking crosses and for winning possession in the defensive third. That dual output – stretching the pitch one way, shutting it down the other – is exactly the kind of balance elite sides crave from their full-backs.
He is not a set-piece artist with a “wand” of a left foot in the mould of Alex Grimaldo, who became a primary creator for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen from that same channel. Chelsea are not signing a playmaker in disguise. They are signing a runner, a stretcher of games, a defender who can turn a back four into a back three in one phase and then appear on the overlap in the next.
For a Chelsea side still trying to blend high-tempo pressing with controlled possession, that profile matters. Chavarría will not dominate the headlines. But he might quietly give their left side the clarity and consistency it has been missing since Cucurella walked out for Madrid.
