Chelsea Nears Deal for Pep Chavarria as Alonso Revamps Flanks

Chelsea are on the brink of landing Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano in a deal that underlines exactly what Xabi Alonso wants his new team to be.

The London club have already tied up personal terms with the 28-year-old and are now putting the final touches on a package worth about £16.3m plus add-ons. After weeks of wrangling, all sides now expect the agreement to go through.

This is not a scouting whim. Chavarria is a specific Alonso pick. The left-back caught the new Chelsea manager’s eye last season when Alonso was in charge of Real Madrid, and the impression clearly stuck. As soon as Alonso walked through the doors at Cobham, Chavarria went near the top of his list.

The deal has not come easily. Chelsea saw an opening £15m bid knocked back almost a month ago, when talks first opened at the end of June. What followed was a grind. Negotiations dragged as Chelsea grew increasingly frustrated with what they felt was a moving target, with Rayo at one point pointing towards the defender’s full £42.8m release clause.

Through it all, Chavarria’s stance stayed firm. Rayo, beaten by Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in May, were under no pressure to sell, but the player made it clear he wanted Stamford Bridge. That desire has helped push the transfer towards the finish line.

For Alonso, Chavarria is about more than just cover at left-back. Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, signed from Atalanta for £47m in July, the Spaniard’s arrival gives the Chelsea manager the tools to recreate the wing-back framework that powered Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024. Width, aggression, and full-backs who can play like wingers: this is the blueprint.

The move also plugs a gap left by Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid in June in a £51.8m deal. Chavarria steps into a position that suddenly needed depth, but he joins a squad that looks increasingly seasoned.

Chelsea’s summer business has not just been about youth and resale value. Experience has walked through the door. Danny Welbeck, 35, has arrived from Brighton to bolster the attack, while 36-year-old Jordan Henderson has joined after cancelling his contract with Brentford. Both bring Premier League know-how to a dressing room that has often lacked it.

There has been headline spending too. Morgan Rogers has come in from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m, a statement signing in the forward line. At the back, Maxence Lacroix has joined from Crystal Palace for £52m, adding pace and composure in central defence.

And the churn is not finished. Midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to follow from partner club Strasbourg shortly, another piece in a rapidly evolving puzzle.

Chavarria’s imminent arrival, though, feels symbolic. This is Alonso putting his stamp on Chelsea’s shape, his way of playing, his balance on the flanks. If the deal closes as expected, the touchlines at Stamford Bridge are about to look very different.
