Chelsea Set to Sign Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano
Chelsea are closing in on Rayo Vallecano left-back Chavarria after finally breaking a month-long deadlock in negotiations with the LaLiga club.
Talks have been ongoing since the end of June for the Spaniard, a key figure in Vallecano’s run to last season’s Conference League final, where they fell to Crystal Palace in Leipzig in May. Chelsea identified him early as the man to plug a glaring gap on the left of their defence after Marc Cucurella’s surprise £51.7million move to Real Madrid earlier in the summer.
Rayo pointed to the 28-year-old’s £42.5m release clause. Chelsea barely glanced at it. They held their ground, chipped away at the price and are now understood to have thrashed out a deal worth an initial £16.2m, with a further £1.7m tied to add-ons.
The pressure finally told.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chavarria is expected to fly to the UK on Friday to undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. Once the formalities are done, he will walk straight into a battle for the starting spot on the left side of defence with Jorrel Hato, another central piece of Chelsea’s reshaped back line.
New head coach Alonso has already attacked the right flank with intent, landing Italy wing-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m. Palestra has wasted no time making an impression on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, and Chavarria’s arrival would complete a rapid, ruthless overhaul of the full-back positions.
This is not a quiet rebuild. Chavarria is set to become Chelsea’s 11th new signing of the summer, joining Palestra, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Harrison Bettoni, as well as previously agreed deals for Valentin Barco, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha and Dastan Satpayev.
Players are pouring in. Others are being shown the door just as quickly.
A string of departures has already followed Cucurella out of Stamford Bridge, with Andrey Santos, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrique George among those to have moved on. Interest is mounting in Pedro Neto, Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong ahead of the September 1 deadline, and Chelsea are braced for more exits.
Trevoh Chalobah has agreed a move to Como, and he is unlikely to be the last centre-back to go. Axel Disasi is expected to leave, with Benoit Badiashile also facing an uncertain future. Loan moves are being explored for Mamadou Sarr and Acheampong, underlining just how aggressively the squad is being trimmed and reshaped.
Up front, nothing is guaranteed either. The futures of Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu all remain in doubt as Chelsea weigh up their attacking options and consider further churn before the window closes. In goal, Filip Jorgensen is poised to join BlueCo sister club Strasbourg, another piece in the wider multi-club puzzle.
And there is still the looming question of Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder continues to be linked with a big-money switch to Real Madrid, a potential deal that would send further shockwaves through a dressing room already in flux.
According to BBC Sport, a raft of youngsters could yet leave on loan, including Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Omari Kellyman, Reggie Walsh, Shim Mheuka and Ishe Samuels-Smith, as Chelsea try to balance development, minutes and the sheer size of the squad.
One thing is clear: Chavarria is not arriving into a settled environment. He is walking into a club tearing up its depth chart, redefining its hierarchy and betting heavily on a new defensive core.
If he nails down that left flank, this summer’s hard bargaining in Madrid and Vallecas may look like one of the smarter gambles of Chelsea’s frantic rebuild.
