Chelsea Signs Wigan Talent Harrison Bettoni on Four-Year Deal

Chelsea have dipped back into the English talent pool, signing 18-year-old midfielder Harrison Bettoni from Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract.

The move brings to an end Bettoni’s breakthrough spell in League One, with Wigan due training compensation after the teenager’s deal at the DW Stadium expired in June. Chelsea have moved quickly, picking up a player whose stock rose sharply across the 2025-26 campaign.

For now, this is a long-term play. Bettoni is expected to spend the coming season in Chelsea’s academy sides while operating on the fringes of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad, close enough to feel the pace of Premier League life, but with room to grow away from the full glare of Stamford Bridge.

Stockport-born and attack-minded, Bettoni made 27 senior appearances for Wigan last season, scoring four goals in a campaign that marked him out as one of the more eye-catching young performers in the division. His first strike, a debut goal against AFC Wimbledon, was voted the club’s goal of the season – a moment that announced him in style and quickly turned heads beyond League One.

He also stepped onto a bigger stage in the FA Cup, featuring in Wigan’s fourth-round tie against Arsenal, a valuable taste of top-level opposition that Chelsea’s scouts will not have ignored.
