Chelsea Target AC Milan Star Leao as Transfer Window Closes

Chelsea have been thrown a late lifeline in the transfer window – and it comes in the shape of one of Serie A’s most reliable stars.

AC Milan are ready to cash in on Portugal World Cup winger Leao, with the 27-year-old’s long stint at San Siro edging towards a conclusion as the club looks to ease financial pressure. For a player long regarded as elite, the numbers are startling: reports in Italy claim an offer of just €40 million (£34m) could now be enough to seal his departure.

Chelsea back in the frame

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao’s representatives have been working the phones across Europe in recent weeks. Initial interest from several Premier League clubs has cooled, Milan’s attempt to steer him toward Roma has gone nowhere, and so his camp has turned to Chelsea.

Roma were sounded out as a potential destination, but the Giallorossi are not pushing ahead with a deal. That stalled avenue has opened the door for Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea presented as a fresh option at a moment when Milan are more open than ever to a sale.

Arsenal and United step away

Earlier in the window, Arsenal looked like serious contenders. Mikel Arteta wanted attacking reinforcements after Leandro Trossard’s exit and Leao’s profile fit the bill. The Gunners, though, moved in a different direction, landing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a £34m transfer. The Greece international has already started to make his presence felt in North London, easing the urgency for another wide forward.

Gabriel Martinelli’s future has added a layer of uncertainty, and for a brief spell Arteta even entertained the idea of a second attacking signing, testing Real Madrid’s resolve with an ambitious move for Vinicius Junior. That push has faded. Arsenal’s attention is now locked on defensive targets, and Leao is no longer on their immediate agenda.

Manchester United also circled when the market first opened. There was concrete interest, but the landscape at Old Trafford has shifted. With Mateus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arriving last summer, Michael Carrick now has depth in the wide positions. United, like Arsenal, have stepped away from the chase for the Milan winger.

A player pushing for England

Leao, for his part, has not hidden where he wants to go next. He has spoken openly about his admiration for the Premier League and his desire to test himself in England after years of success in Italy.

“I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while,” he said earlier this summer, underlining a sense that his Milan chapter is closing.

He did not stop there. “The league [Serie A] is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player. If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy.”

Those words now hang over every conversation about his future. Chelsea know they would be offering him the move he has long hinted at.

Proven on the biggest stage

Leao’s résumé backs up his confidence. He featured in all five of Portugal’s matches at the World Cup under Roberto Martinez, scoring once at the tournament. Portugal’s campaign ended in frustration in the last 16 against eventual champions Spain, but Leao’s presence throughout underlined the trust placed in him at international level.

At 27, he stands in what should be the prime of his career. After a decade of consistency in Serie A and two trophies with Milan, he is convinced he has taken Italian football as far as it can take him. The question that now looms is simple: will Chelsea move quickly enough to give him the Premier League stage he craves, or will one of Europe’s other heavyweights seize the opportunity at a cut-price fee?
