Chelsea’s seven-goal thriller against Brighton on Sunday left Xabi Alonso juggling mixed emotions: a 4–3 win, a debut that crackled with personality, and a fresh worry over Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo scare tempers wild win
Caicedo entered in the second half, only for his afternoon to be cut short not long after. One knock, one worrying signal, and he was back off.
Alonso did not hide the concern but pushed back against talk of a major setback.
“We hope it is not a new injury, and that it is not more serious than the previous time,” the Chelsea manager said after the match.
The Ecuadorian, Alonso explained, chose not to take any chances.
“He was cautious and decided to stop, and his feeling was not the best, but we have to assess his condition,” Alonso noted, stressing that this did not look like a significant escalation. “It was not more than the previous time. He was cautious. His feeling was not the best. It was not something new.”

Martinez makes his mark
If Caicedo’s exit raised eyebrows, Emiliano Martinez’s first outing in Chelsea colours drew a very different reaction from his manager.
The Argentine goalkeeper, a new arrival, left Alonso clearly impressed with his presence as much as his performance.
“I am happy with his first impact. He has this charisma and aura that help him connect with the rest of the team,” Alonso said, highlighting the way Martinez has already started to stamp his personality on the dressing room.
The preparation for his debut had been straightforward.
“I spoke to him yesterday, we discussed the match, and he felt ready. I do not need to tell him many things for him to put in a good performance. He wanted to keep a clean sheet, but I was happy with his first impact.”
The clean sheet escaped him in a chaotic game. The impression did not.
Neto’s future left open
On Pedro Neto, Alonso chose his words carefully. The winger lit up the contest with his intensity, but the noise around his future is getting louder.
“In football, I do not guarantee anything,” the Spaniard said when asked if Neto would still be a Chelsea player by the end of the 2026 summer transfer window.
What Alonso did make clear was his appreciation of the Portuguese attacker’s display.
“I was happy with Pedro’s brilliance. He played with a lot of energy. And he will be very important this season.”
Manchester City and Al-Hilal have both been linked with Neto, with the Saudi club especially keen. For now, he is driving Chelsea’s attacks. How long that remains the case will help shape what kind of team Alonso has in his hands by the time this project truly takes off.
