Chelsea Closing in on £52 Million Transfer for Lacroix
Chelsea are closing in on one of the most expensive defensive deals of the summer, with Crystal Palace centre-back Lacroix on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge in a transfer worth around £52 million ($69m), according to The Athletic.
The Frenchman is expected to undergo his medical on Friday before signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2032 – a statement of faith in a defender whose rise has been rapid and ruthless.
From Wolfsburg prospect to Premier League powerhouse
Lacroix arrived at Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 as a promising talent. Two seasons later, he leaves as the defensive pillar of a side that punched above its weight at home and in Europe.
At 190cm, he brings the kind of presence Premier League forwards feel before they even see him. Last season he became a constant in the Palace back line, making 55 appearances in all competitions, anchoring a team that lifted the Community Shield and went on to win the Conference League.
That body of work did not go unnoticed. His performances secured him a place in France’s 2026 World Cup squad and drove his market value through the roof – from an initial €18m fee to the premium bracket Chelsea are now prepared to pay.
Chelsea’s defensive rebuild under Xabi Alonso
Lacroix has been high on Chelsea’s list of targets since June, one of several names monitored as the club reshaped its defensive plans. Como’s Jacobo Ramon was among the alternatives, but the London club chose to zero in on the Palace defender once it became clear how steep his development curve had become in the Premier League.
Now, with a deal close, the implications for the rest of the back line are impossible to ignore.
His arrival is expected to shake up the hierarchy at centre-back, placing fresh scrutiny on the futures of Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Mamadou Sarr. Not all of them can stay and play significant minutes. Some will be pushed towards the fringes, others towards the exit.
For new manager Xabi Alonso, the task is immediate and unforgiving. Once the paperwork is done, he must fold Lacroix into his defensive structure before the season starts, using what remains of pre-season to build understanding, timing and trust around a player likely to be a first-choice pick.
Chelsea’s hierarchy, meanwhile, face decisions that go beyond the starting XI. They need to trim and balance a crowded central defensive department, moving on surplus options to avoid both a bloated wage bill and an unhappy dressing room.
Palace forced back into the market
If Chelsea see this as a coup, Palace feel the loss. A cornerstone of their recent progress is about to walk out of the door, and the clock is already ticking on his replacement.
The club have begun their search, turning to the Bundesliga and beyond. Augsburg’s Chrislain Matsima has emerged as a leading candidate, with Trabzonspor’s Chibuike Nwaiwu identified as another possible solution.
Palace cannot afford to get this call wrong. Lacroix was more than a name on the teamsheet; he was the base on which a trophy-winning season and a European run were built. Without a suitable replacement before the window closes, the structure Roy Hodgson’s side worked so hard to build could start to creak.
Chelsea, by contrast, are betting that this is the defender who will anchor their next era. A long contract, a hefty fee, a manager intent on imposing his style. If Lacroix settles quickly in west London, this could be the signing that redraws the battle lines at the back – for both clubs.
