Cheltenham Town Sign Winger Jake Evans on Loan

Cheltenham Town have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the season-long loan signing of highly rated winger Jake Evans from Leicester City.

The 17-year-old arrives with something many players his age are still chasing: proper league minutes. Evans featured 16 times in League One for Northampton Town last season, a valuable grounding in the realities of senior football rather than academy comfort.

Now he wants more of it.

"I'm over the moon to be here," he told the club’s website. "I have had a taste of senior football, and I just want more. I can't wait to play for the Gaffer and the Robins fans."

That hunger is exactly what Steve Cotterill has been targeting all summer. This was not a quiet, under-the-radar deal. The Cheltenham boss admitted Evans has been on his list for months, with plenty of competition for his signature.

"Jake has been one of my targets throughout the summer," Cotterill said. "There was a lot of interest in Jake from League Two and higher up the pyramid."

That detail matters. When a teenager with top-flight parentage at Leicester City draws attention from clubs higher up, yet chooses a move where he is likely to play and develop, it speaks to both the player’s ambition and the club’s pull under Cotterill.

Evans brings pace and directness out wide, but Cotterill was quick to underline the bigger picture. This is a long-term football education as much as a short-term attacking option.

"As well as being an exciting player, it is also worth remembering that he is a young man learning his trade in the men's game," the manager added.

Cheltenham now have a live-wire winger with League One experience, a manager who has clearly invested in his progress, and a fanbase about to find out just how quickly a 17-year-old can grow when the stage is his.
