Chiefs Pursue Phili as Du Preez Eyes Stellies Return

Kaizer Chiefs are refusing to loosen their grip on Fawaaz Phili, with the club pushing hard to bring the Stellenbosch FC winger to Naturena before the 2026/27 Betway Premiership kicks off.

Fernando da Cruz is busy stripping down and rebuilding his squad at a pre-season camp in Spain, and Phili has emerged as a central piece in that plan. Chiefs have been circling for months. Now they’re moving in.

The two clubs have kept their cards close to their chests in public, but behind the scenes the picture is far clearer: discussions are advancing, and Chiefs are working on a sweeter, more complex offer to get it over the line.

They first tried to land Phili in the January transfer window, when the junior international also drew an offer from Al-Ittihad Tripoli in Libya. Stellenbosch dug in. Losing a key attacker midway through the campaign, with no time to find a proper replacement, was a risk they refused to take.

That calculation has shifted.

Phili is heading into the final year of his contract. Stellenbosch now face the classic dilemma: cash in while they can, or hold a prized asset for one more season and risk watching him walk away for nothing at the end of the campaign. For a club that prides itself on smart trading, that’s no small decision.

The deal on the table is no longer a straightforward transfer.

Talks indicate Ashley du Preez has already agreed personal terms with Stellenbosch, his former club, in a move that would hinge entirely on Phili heading the other way to Chiefs. It’s a potential reunion for Du Preez in the Cape Winelands, but only if the full swap package comes together.

Chiefs, sensing Stellenbosch’s position softening, are believed to be ready to go further. The Glamour Boys are prepared to add another player into the mix, plus a cash fee, in an effort to close the valuation gap and finally unlock the agreement. The identity of that additional player remains under wraps, adding another layer of intrigue to an already delicate negotiation.

Stellenbosch now sit with a tough call. Do they bank the money, take back Du Preez, add another Chiefs player to their squad and move on from Phili a year early? Or do they gamble on one more season with a key performer, knowing he could leave for free once his contract runs down?

Du Preez, signed by Chiefs from Stellies four years ago, looks increasingly like a man on the brink of going home. Whether he actually does may depend on just how badly Chiefs want Phili — and how much longer Stellenbosch are willing to hold their nerve.
