City Maintains Perfect Start with Haaland's Goal Against Coventry
City’s perfect league start is intact, Coventry beaten, and Erling Haaland already in familiar rhythm. Now the real grind begins.
Enzo Maresca’s side head into Europe with four wins from four domestically, that narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry sealed by yet another Haaland strike. It was efficient rather than spectacular, but it allowed the manager to stick to his word: rotation is coming.
Injury worries from Coventry
The win carried a cost. Nico O’Reilly was set to start but pulled up in the warm-up with a lower back problem, forcing a late reshuffle. Enzo Fernandez stepped in and filled the No10 role, but O’Reilly’s setback adds to a growing list of concerns.
Deadline Day arrival Iliman Ndiaye then hobbled off with what looked like a knock, joining Jeremy Doku in the treatment room and briefly threatening Maresca’s plan to freshen up his attack for Europe.
The timing was awkward. The manager had already gone public with his intention to throw new and younger faces into the Champions League mix.
“We saw today with Ayyoub [Bouaddi], [Ryan] McAidoo, Iliman Ndiaye, they haven’t played in Champions League but they need to start, so on Tuesday they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League,” Maresca said after the Coventry game.
Ndiaye to start in Porto?
Ndiaye’s fitness is the key question. He has been pictured in training, a strong hint he has shaken off the issue and is ready to go at the Estadio Do Dragao. If he is passed fit, he is expected to start off the left, giving City a different profile to the more direct Jeremy Doku.
On the opposite flank, Antoine Semenyo is set to make way for Ryan McAidoo, who Maresca wants to blood on the European stage. Enzo Fernandez should keep the No10 spot after his late call-up against Coventry, tasked with knitting midfield to attack.
Behind him, Ayyoub Bouaddi will anchor the midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, a youthful pairing charged with controlling the tempo in front of what is likely to be an unchanged defence: Josko Gvardiol at left-back, Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias in central defence, and Abdukodir Khusanov on the right.
Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling squad and could feature, giving Maresca another option if the midfield battle in Porto turns attritional.
Haaland to lead the line – for now
Maresca has already warned that Haaland cannot start every game as City fight on four fronts. The schedule will force him to rest his star striker at times.
Not this time, though. Barring a late twist, the Norwegian is expected to lead the line in Portugal, his goals still the sharpest weapon in a side that is about to discover how ready it really is for the demands of a long European campaign.
