Cole Palmer's Future: Will He Join Manchester United?
Cole Palmer has barely had time to hang his shirts in the Chelsea dressing room, yet the tug of Manchester already shadows his career.
The 22-year-old left Manchester City for Stamford Bridge in 2023 in a £42.5m move that looked like a decisive break from his past. Thirteen years at the Etihad, a highly rated academy graduate, a player City didn’t really want to lose. But underneath all that sky blue has always been a streak of red: Palmer grew up a Manchester United fan.
That detail refuses to go away. It colours every rumour, every whisper, every sideways glance when United’s name appears next to his in a headline.
Gallas: “He will definitely go to Manchester United”
Into that noise steps William Gallas, never shy of a strong opinion and more than familiar with the politics of big English clubs after spells at Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.
The former France defender is convinced Palmer’s story has an Old Trafford chapter still to come.
“I don’t think Cole Palmer will go right now. I don’t think it’s time to go right now,” Gallas told iPredicta, cutting through the idea of any imminent move.
Then he went further.
“He will definitely go to Manchester United in the future if he’s a big fan, if he’s got a dream to play for Man United, he will definitely go there, but right now I don’t think so.
“I think he needs to have one more big season as he did two years ago, before he got his injury problem, then he might move.”
In Gallas’ eyes, the path is clear: dominate at Chelsea, prove the form is no one-season surge, and then cash in the childhood dream. One more big year, then the door swings open.
Palmer pushes back, but the links linger
Earlier this year, reports suggested Palmer was homesick in London and that United were ready to exploit any discomfort, hoping the lure of Old Trafford and a return to his home city might turn his head.
Palmer publicly shut that down. No truth in the homesickness talk, no truth in a move to United, he insisted. London, Chelsea, the project under new management – that was his line.
Yet the speculation hasn’t cooled. It rarely does when the narrative fits so neatly: boyhood United fan leaves Manchester City, explodes at Chelsea, and eventually walks out at Old Trafford in red, not blue. It reads like a script, and Gallas has simply read it aloud.
Santos arrives, and a message from Palmer
While Palmer’s future remains the subject of debate, another Chelsea midfielder has already crossed the divide.
Andrey Santos has joined Manchester United on a five-year deal, with an initial £48m fee and a further £2m in add-ons agreed with Chelsea. The Brazilian needed minutes, a clearer route into a starting XI, and saw his future away from Stamford Bridge.
“I’m so excited to be here. So pleased,” Santos said after completing the move.
Then came the detail that will keep the Palmer story rumbling on. The new United midfielder revealed he had received a message from his former Chelsea teammate as soon as the deal was done.
“I got a message from Cole [Palmer], he sent a message because he was born here [Manchester], so he knows everything here.
“He said all the best for you, for your career, you deserve this, a lot of things. So I’m so excited to be here in Manchester with my new teammates.”
Nothing incendiary. No secret plotting. Just a local lad wishing a colleague well in a city he knows better than most. But in the current climate, every word feeds the narrative.
One more big season – and then what?
Right now, Palmer remains central to Chelsea’s plans. He arrived for big money, delivered with star quality, and quickly became the face of a new era at Stamford Bridge. For a club desperate for stability and identity, he is not a player they can easily afford to lose.
Gallas, though, has planted a flag in the future. In his mind, the trajectory is almost unavoidable: if Palmer continues to rise, the gravitational pull of his boyhood club eventually wins.
Chelsea will fight that. United will test it. Palmer will define it.
One more big season, as Gallas demands, might not just shape Chelsea’s fortunes. It could decide whether his long-term story is written in blue – or finally in the red he grew up dreaming about.
