Como 1907 Supports Roberta Picchi in Breast Cancer Battle
Como 1907 have announced that forward Roberta Picchi has been diagnosed with breast cancer – and responded with a powerful gesture of faith in their 34-year-old striker.
In the hours after extensive medical tests confirmed the diagnosis, the club moved quickly to extend Picchi’s contract through to the end of the 2027-28 season. No clauses, no caveats. Just a clear message: her future at the club is not up for debate while she fights the biggest battle of her life.
Club closes ranks around Picchi
The Italian side confirmed the news in an official statement, revealing that Picchi will now begin a course of treatment overseen jointly by Como 1907’s medical staff and external oncology specialists. The club underlined that its own doctors will work directly with the experts responsible for her care, building a dedicated support structure around the player.
“Roberta will now begin her treatment, supported throughout by the Club's medical team, who will work closely with the specialists responsible for her care. Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead,” the statement read.
The contract renewal formed a central part of that promise. Como framed the long-term deal as an institutional commitment, not just a sporting decision, stressing that they intend to stand by Picchi all the way through her treatment and recovery.
“As part of that continued commitment, the Club has also renewed Roberta's contract until the end of the 2027-28 season. At this time, we ask that Roberta's privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery,” the club added, drawing a firm line around the player’s personal space.
Life without their leader
While Picchi turns her attention to therapy and rehabilitation, Selena Mazzantini’s squad must quickly adapt on the field. Como will be without their seasoned striker when they travel to face Brescia in the Coppa Italia Women on September 20, the first competitive test of a demanding campaign.
That tie is followed by a marquee fixture to launch their 2026-27 Serie A Women season: a home clash against AC Milan at Centro Sportivo SNEF Lambrone a week later. It is the kind of game Picchi would normally lead from the front.
Now, her teammates will be asked to lead for her.
