Como announce themselves to Europe with a statement win – and a new star.
Diao’s dream night
The Champions League anthem had barely faded when Como tore into Leipzig, and by the final whistle the scoreline – 4-1 – told only part of the story.
This was Como’s first-ever match in Europe’s elite competition. It looked nothing like a debut. It looked like a team that had been here for years.
Front and centre was Diao. On his Champions League bow, the young forward did exactly what every kid imagines when they stare at the TV: he scored.
“It is the dream of all kids, I watched the Champions League games for my whole life,” he told Sky Sport Italia afterwards. He spoke of thinking about the anthem straight after their domestic win over Genoa, of waiting for that moment. When it finally came, he didn’t freeze. He finished.
The goal doubled as a late birthday gift. Diao turned 21 on Monday. By midweek, Europe knew his name.
Como play like they belong
If there were any nerves about this historic night, Como hid them well.
They made a blistering start and never eased off. Martin Baturina struck, Tasos Douvikas joined in, Maxi Perrone added his own finish. Every attack carried menace. Leipzig, a regular presence in this competition, were ripped apart by a side supposedly learning on the job.
Como stuck to their principles. They built from the back, they passed through pressure, they refused to retreat into a shell just because the stage was bigger and the anthem louder. It was the same style as in Serie A – only now the whole continent was watching.
The only blemish came when Andrija Maksimovic pounced on a rare mistake while Como tried to play out from defence. One lapse, one goal conceded. It barely registered against the noise of celebration around the stadium.
From injury frustration to European breakthrough
For Diao, the explosion on this stage did not come easily.
Since joining the club in 2025, his path has been broken up by setbacks: a foot fracture, then a thigh strain. Both spells on the sidelines stalled his progress, cost him minutes, and forced him to start again more than once.
He didn’t walk into this moment. He limped towards it, then ran.
His persistence finally met its perfect stage under the floodlights. A goal, a win, and the feeling that this was only the beginning.
“A win in the first Champions League game, we cannot have asked for more,” he said. The satisfaction went beyond the scoreline. “We’re all happy with the result, but also the performance and the joy of our fans.”
Italy’s standard-bearers – for now
On Matchday 1, Como did more than win a football match. They carried the Italian flag almost on their own.
While Inter and Napoli slipped to defeats and Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce, Como were ruthless. Four goals, three points, and a message: they are not here to make up the numbers.
The 4-1 victory sets a sharp, ambitious tone for their European campaign. The question now is not whether Como belong at this level.
It’s how far this fearless debutant can go, with a 21-year-old dreamer leading the charge.
