Even so, the projected XI looks strong. Bart Verbruggen should start in goal, behind a back line of Ferdi Kadioglu, Lewis Dunk, Luka Vuskovic and Olivier Boscagli. In midfield, Yasin Ayari, Maxim De Cuyper, Malick Junior Yalcouye, Diego Gomez and Pascal Gross are expected to form a fluid unit behind Charalampos Kostoulas, who leads the line.

Brighton have the form, the rhythm and, crucially, the goals. Coventry have the desperation.

History offers Coventry a sliver of hope

The head-to-head record does at least give the home fans something to cling to.

These clubs last met in the FA Cup in February 2018, when Brighton claimed a 3-1 home win. Before that, they crossed paths in the Championship in 2011/12 and 2006, with Coventry winning two of those three league fixtures.

Across the last five meetings, Coventry actually edge it: three wins to Brighton’s two, with both sides scoring freely. It is a small sample, a different era and a different level, but it’s a reminder that this fixture has not always tilted towards the Seagulls.
