Cristian Chivu on John Stones: A Cornerstone for Inter
Cristian Chivu did not bother hiding his excitement. Sitting in front of the cameras at his pre-match press conference, the Inter coach spoke about John Stones like a man who knows he has just been handed a cornerstone.
"I'm happy with his arrival," Chivu said, outlining exactly why the England defender matters so much to his project: quality, personality, charisma. In his eyes, Stones does more than fill a gap. He lifts an entire department. “He raises the level of our defence,” the coach underlined, framing the signing as a statement of intent rather than a simple market opportunity.
Stones as a standard-setter
For Chivu, this is about more than one player. It is about aligning the squad with the club’s ambitions. Inter, he stressed, already have a competitive group, but he made it clear that players of Stones’ calibre are the ones who deliver that “quality leap” needed to stay at the top.
Right now, the coach is working with a squad still missing some key figures, with several players yet to return from post-World Cup holidays. That reality has not dampened his mood. If anything, it has sharpened his focus.
“Right now, we're enjoying who we have here,” he said, noting that there is still a full month left in the transfer window. The message was calm but pointed: the base is strong, but the ceiling can still be raised.
A test against Maresca and City
On the pitch, the next examination comes against Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City, a benchmark opponent at any stage of the season, let alone in this phase of preparation. Chivu called it “special” to face a team of that stature, while acknowledging that Inter are nowhere near full physical sharpness.
“Obviously, we're not at 100% physically, but we'll do our best,” he said. The friendly may not come with points attached, but for a coach bedding in a major defensive signing and waiting on returning internationals, it offers a valuable gauge.
Stones, he insisted, “raises the bar”. That phrase keeps returning when Chivu talks about his new centre-back, and it doubles as a description of Inter’s broader strategy. The club are not treating this as the end of their summer business. Far from it.
Market still open, eyes on the right flank
Inter are already looking beyond Stones. The right-wing position has been flagged as a priority, and the club are actively searching for reinforcements there. Chivu did not dress it up. The squad is competitive, but “there's always a need for important players”.
The approach, though, is measured. No panic, no scattergun. “Patience is needed, the market is still long,” he reminded. He spoke like a coach fully aligned with his directors: clear on what is missing, clear on the profile required, and unwilling to compromise on standards.
“We are all good at understanding what's missing right now, especially regarding squad depth,” he said. The emphasis fell again on depth and quality, not just numbers.
Raising the bar, not changing the core
Chivu’s insistence is consistent: Inter must add players who want to be part of what he calls a “wonderful group”, but they must also be good enough to push that group higher. He has “always asked to raise the bar and bring in important players,” and Stones fits that brief perfectly.
The coach praised the level his current players have maintained “for many years”, but he is not content to live off past standards. He spoke of “paying attention to opportunities” to strengthen, suggesting a club ready to pounce if the right name becomes available before the window closes.
Stones is the first major piece of that plan. The right flank is the next target. A test against Maresca’s City will offer an early glimpse of how far Inter have come – and how far they still intend to go.
