Crystal Palace Investigated for Breaking Substitution Rules in WSL Debut

Crystal Palace find themselves in trouble after their recent Women’s Super League match against Everton. Though they secured a 1-0 win with a goal from Lexi Lloyd-Smith, the victory may be overshadowed by an investigation into a substitution rules breach.

Substitution Controversy Clouds Opening Win

During their first WSL match, Crystal Palace reportedly used four separate substitution windows, which goes against league regulations. The rules allow up to five substitutes but only during three stoppages in play, not counting half-time. This issue was flagged when manager Jo Potter made a fourth substitution opportunity in second-half stoppage time, bringing on Kirsty Howat for Shannon O’Brien. Earlier changes had included Abbie Larkin, Ashleigh Weerden, and Allyson Swaby.

WSL Confirms Formal Inquiry

The Women’s Super League released a statement confirming the breach: "We can confirm there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match. We will now conduct an investigation alongside both clubs and Pro Ref and update in due course."

Possible Consequences and Tribunal Hearing

The league does not have an automatic penalty for this infringement. Instead, the matter may go to an independent tribunal. This panel has the authority to impose various sanctions, such as warnings, fines, points deductions, or even ordering a replay of the fixture. If a replay is mandated, the initial 1-0 result would be nullified, forcing Crystal Palace and Everton to meet again.

Officials Removed After Oversight

The refereeing team, including whistleblower Megan Wilson, also faced consequences for failing to prevent the illegal substitution. They have been stood down from officiating upcoming WSL matches due to this oversight.

Looking Ahead

Crystal Palace, who earned promotion to the top division last season by finishing runners-up in the second tier, now face a tough challenge away at Arsenal on Sunday.
