Declan Rice Eager to Join Arsenal Pre-Season from Day One

Declan Rice is in no mood for a gentle reintroduction to club football.

Barely weeks after going the distance with England at the 2026 World Cup, the Arsenal midfielder has already told Mikel Arteta he wants to be available from the very first day he walks back into pre-season.

Rice pushing to play from day one

Arsenal’s England, Spain and France internationals are all on staggered, late returns after their deep runs at the tournament, which finished on July 18. For the England contingent – Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze – that means at least a three-week break before they rejoin Arteta’s squad.

The calendar says holiday. Rice’s mindset says otherwise.

“When I speak to Declan, he is already talking, ‘okay, if I come this day, then I can play (then)’, and the rest the same,” Arteta told Arsenal.com, lifting the lid on his midfielder’s hunger to get straight back into action.

The manager was quick to frame it within a wider plan. “We have three different pre-seasons with different groups. But the most important thing is not the programme, it is the attitude behind the programme.”

On that front, Rice is setting the tone.

Eye on Dortmund – and beyond

The dates draw a clear line. Rice’s holiday is due to end on August 9, the same day Arsenal face Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup at the Emirates Stadium. On paper, it is the final day of rest. In Rice’s head, it might be matchday.

Ordinarily, no one expects a player to step off a plane and straight into a game. Even for elite athletes, there is usually a buffer: testing, light sessions, a gradual build-up of minutes. Rice is effectively volunteering to skip that comfort zone.

Hypothetically, that could make him available for the Dortmund squad, even if only for a short cameo. A handful of minutes, a few sprints, a taste of rhythm. Just enough to sharpen the edge.

Arsenal’s sports science staff would likely prefer a more measured approach. The following week offers a more natural runway: a friendly against Como on the Wednesday, then the Community Shield against Manchester City on the Sunday. Those fixtures are the real target, the first steps into a season in which Arsenal again expect to challenge on every front.

Yet if Rice can get on the pitch against Dortmund, even briefly, it hands Arteta a valuable advantage. It nudges his leader in midfield closer to full match sharpness before the first piece of silverware is contested.

For a club trying to turn near-misses into trophies, having Declan Rice already counting down the days – and the minutes – of his own pre-season might be exactly the kind of obsession they need.
