Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Contract with Liverpool: Champions League Ambitions
Dominik Szoboszlai has never hidden his ambition. Now Liverpool have nailed it to the mast with him.
The Hungarian midfielder has signed a new five-year contract that ties him to Anfield until the summer of 2031, and he has made his target brutally clear: bring the Champions League back to Liverpool.
A statement in a summer of upheaval
This is not a routine extension. Not in this Liverpool summer.
A new manager, Andoni Iraola, is through the door. Three pillars of the recent era – Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate – have walked away as free agents. The squad is being reshaped on the fly, the dressing room hierarchy rewritten.
Amid all that, the club have moved to lock in the player supporters voted as their player of the season. Szoboszlai, signed from RB Leipzig in 2023, has grown into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders and, increasingly, one of Liverpool’s standard-bearers.
He already has 147 Liverpool appearances and 28 goals behind him, plus a Premier League title and a Carabao Cup in his collection. Yet his reaction to the new deal was telling.
“There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” he said after signing. He quickly clarified the contradiction: he is content, but not satisfied. That edge, he insisted, has driven him since childhood. “It was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.”
From fan favourite to reference point
Szoboszlai arrived as a talent. He now talks like a reference point.
“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can,” he said, leaning into the responsibility that comes with a long contract and a leading role in a squad entering a new phase.
When he first walked through the doors at Anfield, he spoke about wanting to win everything. That line can sound like a cliché on presentation day. Three years on, after a trophyless 2025/26 campaign that stung the club, he has doubled down rather than backed away.
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either,” he insisted. “It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”
The Champions League reference is not idle. Liverpool’s last tilt ended painfully, a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. For a club that measures itself in European nights, that kind of exit lingers.
Stability, with standards attached
This contract gives Iraola something priceless: continuity in the middle of the pitch.
While Salah’s goals, Robertson’s relentlessness on the left and Konate’s presence at the back all vanish from the team sheet, Szoboszlai’s extension offers a core around which to build. His versatility, his running power, his eye for goal – they are football assets. His mentality is something else again.
He called the day he extended his deal “maybe my biggest day”. Then he paused and ranked it. Signing for Liverpool the first time still stands out. The birth of his child, of course, sits above football. But in his career, he placed this moment firmly in his top three.
It sounded less like a player cashing in on a good season and more like one nailing down his prime years to a single project.
A squad in motion
Around him, the rebuild continues.
Centre-back Jeremy Jacquet has arrived from Rennes. Winger Victor Munoz has come in from Osasuna. Both are signings with promise, but they do not answer the obvious question: who replaces Salah’s goals and Robertson’s drive?
Liverpool have yet to find those successors, and the closing weeks of the transfer window are set to be frantic. Iraola and the recruitment team must move decisively if the club are to match the scale of Szoboszlai’s ambition.
Because the bar he has set is clear. Domestic trophies. A response to a flat, barren 2025/26. And, hanging over everything, that familiar European obsession.
He has committed his future on the understanding that Liverpool will chase it. The only question now is whether the club can build a team around him capable of following where he wants to lead.
