Dylan Lawlor Returns for Cardiff City vs Charlton Athletic
Cardiff City’s search for a first Championship win of the season has received a timely lift, with Wales defender Dylan Lawlor cleared to return for Saturday’s home clash with Charlton Athletic.
The 20-year-old, a mainstay last term, has not played in 2026-27 after suffering a knee injury, but is now “good to go” for the lunchtime kick-off (12:30 BST) at Cardiff City Stadium.
“Dylan will definitely be available, he's good to go,” confirmed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who has watched his side draw four and lose three of their opening seven league games.
Will Fish, who also returned to training this week after hernia surgery, will not be rushed back.
“Will Fish won't be available, he's probably another week behind so we're not going to take any chances, but Dylan's back fully fit.”
Lawlor back after rapid rise – and a setback
Lawlor’s return comes at a significant moment for both player and club. He made 43 appearances for club and country in 2025-26, powering through a breakthrough year that saw him cement his place in Barry-Murphy’s side and earn Wales recognition.
The knee problem halted that momentum and cost him a spot in Wales’ Nations League squad named on Tuesday. Now he’s back in the frame for Cardiff, and potentially straight into the starting XI.
“He's trained really well. We'll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” Barry-Murphy said.
“But he's fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”
The manager’s dilemma is a welcome one. Cardiff have been forced into improvisation at the back, and the return of a natural centre-half offers a chance to restore some order.
Defensive reshuffle finally easing
Injury problems have ripped through Cardiff’s defence in the early weeks of the season. Gabriel Osho has missed games, Fish has been sidelined, and Barry-Murphy has had to juggle his resources.
New signing Krystian Bielik arrived from West Bromwich Albion to bolster the spine, but the Bluebirds have still been forced to push full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan into central roles in recent matches.
Lawlor’s reappearance, and Fish edging closer, changes the picture.
“They're two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we've lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said.
“I'm very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”
Cardiff’s league position reflects a team that has competed without quite convincing. With a natural centre-back back in the fold and another on the way, Barry-Murphy finally has the option to pick a back line rather than piece one together.
Attacking threats still missing – but close
Not all of the injury bulletin is as positive. Cardiff remain without Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies, as well as defender Calum Chambers.
Chambers is dealing with knee, neck and back issues and is awaiting further assessment. Colwill and Davies, though, are edging closer to involvement after ankle and hamstring problems respectively.
“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” Barry-Murphy revealed.
“Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we'll know more on the timescale.”
For now, the focus is on Charlton and on a defence that finally looks like it might resemble Barry-Murphy’s original plan. Cardiff have been waiting for a spark to ignite their season. Lawlor’s return might just be it.
