Eduardo Camavinga Commits to Real Madrid Amid United Interest
Eduardo Camavinga has made his choice. Manchester United called, Real Madrid hesitated over Rodri, Barcelona moved, the market twisted – and the Frenchman has decided he is going nowhere.
The 23-year-old, coming off the most difficult season of his career, has told every suitor the same thing: his future, at least for now, remains at the Bernabeu.
United knock, Camavinga shuts the door
Manchester United’s search for a defensive midfielder has been deliberate and persistent. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already arrived to reshape the centre of the pitch, but the rebuild is incomplete. One more specialist is on the list, someone to sit deeper, break up play, and give structure to the new-look engine room.
Camavinga’s name inevitably surfaced. His profile fits the role, his ceiling is obvious, and his situation at Real Madrid looked, for a moment, vulnerable.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United made their move in July. They contacted Camavinga’s agents, asked to be kept informed, and explored whether the door might be open. It never was.
The message from Camavinga’s camp did not change, whether the interest came from United or from clubs who had sounded him out even earlier: he wants to stay at Real Madrid.
No flirtation. No “let’s see later in the window.” Just a clear stance from a player coming off a “torrid” campaign that cost him his place in France’s World Cup squad, but who is still viewed by many in the game as a temporary casualty of form, not a fading force.
Rodri chase collapses, Camavinga’s role grows
Real Madrid’s own summer planning briefly threatened that clarity. The European champions moved to strengthen their midfield with Bernardo Silva, and then set their sights on the biggest prize of all: Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and Manchester City’s metronome.
A move for Rodri had been approved internally. The fit was obvious. Same zone of the pitch, same responsibility, same profile of control. For Camavinga, it would have meant an elite rival in precisely his role.
But Real Madrid hesitated when it came to lodging a formal bid. That hesitation opened the door to Barcelona, who stepped in with conviction. Personal terms were agreed, and the Catalans surged towards a deal expected to be worth around €70m.
Once Rodri gave his full priority to Barcelona, Madrid walked away. No late bid. No hijack. The pursuit ended.
For Camavinga, that shift changes everything. The clearest threat to his minutes in the holding role has disappeared. The path to a central place in Jose Mourinho’s plans looks far less cluttered.
Romano reports that this has only hardened Camavinga’s resolve. He is “even more motivated” to stay, fight for his place and convince Mourinho he can be the long-term anchor of Madrid’s midfield.
United look elsewhere
United, meanwhile, must turn the page. Their interest in Camavinga was real and “concrete”, but the answer is final. No late twist, no deadline-day drama. The Frenchman is not coming.
The recruitment team has already drawn up alternatives. Manu Kone, Sander Berge, Carlos Baleba and Tyler Adams have all been linked as potential options in the defensive midfield bracket, each offering a different blend of energy, physicality and experience.
There is also a more left-field possibility. Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, capable of playing both at left-back and at the base of midfield, has been offered to United, with the Gunners prepared to cash in. Versatility appeals in a long season; so does youth, if the price is right.
United still intend to add that final piece in midfield before calling their overhaul complete. The profile is clear. The target, now, is not.
Camavinga has chosen the Bernabeu and the battle for Mourinho’s trust. United must find their linchpin somewhere else – and quickly, if this rebuilt midfield is to look anything like a finished product by the time the season truly bites.
