Enzo Fernandez Faces Reality Check Ahead of Porto Clash
Enzo Maresca is not in the mood to play it safe.
With a Champions League trip to Porto on Tuesday and a Manchester derby looming on the horizon, the Manchester City head coach is expected to shuffle his pack – and that could mean a step back for Enzo Fernandez after just one full start.
Fernandez faces early reality check
Fernandez’s Premier League bow came earlier than planned. The £125m midfielder had been pencilled in for a watching brief against Coventry City on Saturday, only for plans to be ripped up in the warm-up when Nico O'Reilly suffered a back problem.
Suddenly, Fernandez was in from the start, lining up alongside Elliot Anderson and getting through 76 minutes before being withdrawn. It was a solid first outing, but the schedule is unforgiving: three days later, Porto away; after that, United.
Maresca knows what that means. Rotation is not a luxury this week, it’s a necessity. Fernandez, expensive or not, is unlikely to be spared that reality.
Bouaddi ready to step in
The obvious beneficiary is Ayyoub Bouaddi. The young midfielder has already felt the heat of Champions League nights with Lille and looks primed to step into the XI at the Estadio do Dragao.
His introduction would be one of several tweaks Maresca is weighing up. The idea is clear: keep the core sharp, spread the load, and arrive at the derby with legs – and minds – intact.
Foden to reclaim his stage
Up front, Iliman Ndiaye’s debut against Coventry ended in the 87th minute, the forward forced off by cramp. The issue is not expected to rule him out of the Porto trip, but his starting spot is far from guaranteed.
Phil Foden is back to full fitness and pushing hard. In this kind of week, a fully sharp Foden is difficult to ignore, especially with Jeremy Doku still sidelined by a calf problem. The England international offers control, incision, and a proven big-game temperament. This is his kind of stage.
Fresh legs at full-back
The changes are unlikely to stop in midfield and attack. At the weekend, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol were asked to patrol the full-back positions. In Portugal, Maresca has the option – and the incentive – to freshen things up.
Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are both pushing to start, offering more energy out wide and a different dynamic against a Porto side led by William Gomes and the evergreen Pepe. With City expected to see plenty of the ball, those full-back roles could prove decisive in pinning Porto back.
How City could line up
All signs point towards Maresca leaning into his depth rather than resisting it. A possible Manchester City XI at the Estadio do Dragao:
Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Dias, Ait-Nouri; Anderson, Bouaddi; Semenyo, Cherki, Foden; Haaland.
